REWARD
these challenges, it’s like having access to a payroll mastermind group – helping you know where to start and what to consider. But, without question, our favourite section must be the employment law updates. While we don’t get directly involved in employment law cases, we love the insight it gives into how poor decisions can affect business reputations – and the determination it takes for employees to seek justice. There’s often a few raised eyebrows and remarks like, “I can’t believe they won that case.” It’s a talking point, and a real eye-opener.
Tracy Jerram MCIPP, Commercial Director, Cox & Co Payroll Solutions, shares why this very magazine is so important to her and her team
article involves participating in a panel discussion. It’s a platform which gives back what you put in, and we love being part of that. It also fosters a sense of community. Reading about others’ achievements, especially during accreditation or awards season, is hugely inspiring. Seeing the Payroll Assurance Scheme (PAS) celebrated every month motivated us to achieve our own PAS accreditation in July 2025, and we couldn’t be prouder. Elevating payroll – one page at a time One of the most empowering aspects of Professional is how it champions the raising of standards across our industry, not just technically, but reputationally. The magazine doesn’t just provide legislative updates and best practice guidance; it actively helps payroll professionals build confidence, develop leadership skills and amplify their voices. Articles which explore how to boost payroll’s visibility within your organisation or how to create a culture of self-promotion and brand building are particularly valuable. Whether it’s practical advice on stakeholder engagement or inspiring stories of how others have secured a seat at the top table, Professional constantly reinforces the idea that payroll isn’t just a back-office function but a strategic force. And by reading,
reflecting and implementing what we learn, we’ve become more confident in showing our value as both individuals and as a bureau. In fact, the very existence of a magazine dedicated to our profession sends a powerful message to the wider business world: payroll is not only a recognised discipline, but also one that demands ongoing attention, insight and respect.
Mascots, memories and #PayrollPets
And of course, we must give a special shout-out to Ophelia the Octopus, our beloved mascot and Professional regular, proudly featured on the Payroll Pets page. Ophelia represents everything we love about payroll: multitasking, adaptability and charm in abundance. She’s a bit of a star at Cox & Co, and her monthly appearance always brings a smile. But the best bit, we even took Professional on holiday! During our celebration trip to Barcelona for National Payroll Week 2023, we packed covers in our hand luggage (yes, really!) and captured a rooftop promotional shot for social media. It was a fun reminder that wherever we go, we’re part of something bigger. From our desks to our foyer, Professional is ever-present in our office. It’s a symbol of our connection to the CIPP and to our wider payroll family. Whether you’re new to the profession or a seasoned expert, there’s always something to learn, contribute or reflect on. At Cox & Co, we don’t just read Professional . We live it. n
