be to forget God. History proves that this is true. Men should give God this one day out of seven, first, because He deserves it. Surely the Creator deserves the special praise and worship of the creature. Again, men should worship the Lord in a special way one day out of seven because they need this spiritual exercise. Worship is man’s highest func tion. He was made to worship. He is a dependent creature and instinctively his heart reaches out after God. Sin has marred his soul and incapacitated him for the enjoyment of God, but through the redemptive work of Christ and the regenerative work of the Holy Spirit, believers have been renewed and find it the joy and inspiration of their lives to bow in glad and humble worship be fore the Lord. But there is another reason attached the giving of the fourth commandment, namely, man needs the sabbath as a day of rest (Ex. 20:9, 10). The restrictions regarding labor on the sabbath were given not only because the holiness of the day was to be acknowledged, but also because man’s body needed this time of rest and relaxation. The love and wisdom of God is seen in the giving of the sabbath rest. The Present Application of the Sabbath Day In the first place, let us note that salvation is in no way connected with the observance of Saturday or Sunday or any other day as a day of worship. It is true that in the Old Testament the various prohibitions and commandments regarding the worship of God were binding and any member of the Hebrew nation who refused to obey was cut off from God’s people. But all this was “under law” and the believer in the New Testament dispensation is no longer “under law” but “ under grace” (Bom. 6:14). The New Testament makes it abun dantly plain that the only way of salva tion is simple faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as the perfect Saviour from all sin. Nowhere does the New Testament make sabbath observance a condition of salvation. The Christian who knows the message of John and his Gospel and Paul in Romans and Galatians under stands that a man is saved by faith and not by the works of the law (cf. John 1:12; 3:36; 5:24; Romans 1:16, 17; 3:21-31; 5:1; Gal. 2:16; 3:10-13). Let us observe that the seventh day was an exclusively Jewish sabbath and not in any way directly connected with the New Testament dispensation. We have already noted in Exodus 31:13, 17, that the sabbath was given by God to the Hebrew nation as a sign of the covenant He made with them and not with the New Testament Church. Further let us note that immediately following the resurrection of Christ the Christian church instinctively began to worship on the Lord’s Day, the day of T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S
