Testament does not mention the tithe. The question comes, should the Chris tian tithe? Many of us think he should. The thought comes that if the Old Tes tament saint was expected to give tithes and offerings how much more should the New Testament give at least the same amount. If God’s budget depended on the tenth in the Old Testament before the Great Commission was given, how much more is at least the tenth needed in this day when God has expanded His work to include the entire earth! When Paul urged Christians to give proportionately (1 Cor. 16:2) it seems reasonable that this man, Hebrew Chris tian that he was, had in mind the tenth as the logical amount to “ lay by him in store.” Consider, too, the fact that since the New Testament does not specifically mention the tithe the Christian must be expected to give more than the tithe. Are we to suppose that the Christian is meant to give less and to be less gener ous with his God than the Hebrew in the Old Testament time? God’s Blessings on His People Are Conditioned by Their Generosity With Him That this principle is laid down by Scripture is clear both from the Old Testament and from the New. Notice in Malachi 3:10-12 that spiritual bless ings (v. 10), physical blessings (v. 11), and universal blessing (v. 12), are con ditioned on how God’s people give. The Apostle stresses this same truth in Second Corinthians 9:6, “ This I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.” The Christian does not give to God in order to get, but he discovers that God will have no debtors. Are you a tither? Will you dare to “ prove” God in the matter of your money? Blessed is the church that walketh not in the counsel of the Modernists, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor maketh a show of elegance. But its delight is in the salvation of souls; and it teacheth the Word in sea son, out of season. And it shall be like a beacon light which directeth sinners to the Lamb of God. Its influence also shall not wither; and whatsoever it doeth shall prosper. The Modernists are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the Modernists shall not stand in the judgment, nor Scorners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of Bible believers: but the way of the Modernists shall perish. —Carleton H. Wright, D.D.S. T H E K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S
