idols. The people cried out for forgive ness and again returned to God. Faith fully they served Him during the life of their leader Joshua who had led them since the death of Moses. Not long after Joshua’s death, the Israelites again turned their hearts away from God and grieved Him. They commenced to worship idols. God allowed their ene mies to take them because of their sin. Each time that God sent a judge to deliver His people, they returned and worshiped Him until the death of that judge, and then they commenced wor shiping idols again and grieved God once more. God’s justice and His love are the same today as they were in Old Testa ment times. He has given in His Word certain rules or commandments which those who love the Lord Jesus as their Saviour are to obey. When we disobey Him, His love causes Him to punish us that we may return to Him and serve Him once again. Sometimes He sends our parents or our pastor or our Sunday school teacher to talk with us and to pray with us and to lead us back to Him. Always He tries to bring us back to love and to serve Him faithfully. It was a time of national emergency in Israel. Sin had brought it into ex istence. The book of Judges presents seven different instances when Israel went into apostasy. Each time as the re sult of their apostasy, the Lord chas tised them by allowing some nation round about to oppress them. As a re sult of this oppression, on each occa sion the children of Israel cried unto the Lord for deliverance and the Lord in His mercy always condescended to raise up a deliverer to save them from their troubles. Sin, bondage, repentance, restoration—these four words pretty well describe the main message of the book of Judges. ' Upon the occasion of today’s lesson, after Israel’s sin they had been taken captive to Jabin, king of Canaan. This king was in control in the region of northern Palestine in the vicinity of the waters of Merom. God delivered them mainly through the leadership of a woman by the name of Deborah. The lesson suggests the blessed truth that when God’s people show the least in clination to live purely and to walk humbly before Him, He will undertake for them and give them victory over their enemies. Her Plan of Operation 4:4-8 Deborah was a prophetess, that is, she was the inspired mouthpiece of the Word of God to her people. their affliction. Thus God showed His grace and gave His people another chance. The disappointing part of it all is that Israel never seemed to learn from their experiences of failure and chastisement, to keep themselves in the way of the Lord. Soon they were back in their old ways again. How like them most of us are today. We yield so easily to the pull of the world, the flesh and the devil. Memory Verse: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psa. 33:12). God’s chosen people, the Jews, or the nation of Israel, were dear to His heart always. He cared for their needs and led them in His ways. But like God’s children today, they sometimes sinned and refused to obey His commandments. When this was true, His love caused Him to punish them that they might come back to Him. Sometimes when the children of Israel sinned God permitted their enemies to take them captive to distant lands or to make them slaves for a time. When God’s children were sorry for their sins, God sent deliverers called Judges to lead them back to Him. One day an angel of the Lord reminded the Israelites of the wonderful way in which God had brought them from the land of Egypt to the land which He had promised to give them for their own. God had told His people to not befriend the wicked people who lived in the new land and to throw down their altars which had been built to wicked UNIQUE CHART OF BIBLICAL NATIONS AND RELATED DATA 34x10 inches 5700 BC to 400 AD $1 Postpaid JEROME A.
