THANKFULNESS IN DARKENING DAYS [ Continued from page 423]

“ false teachers” arise among the people, and “privily” bring in “ damnable here sies, even denying the Lord that bought them . . . and many . . . follow their per nicious ways” (2 Pet. 2:12). Supposedly choice saints are falling by the wayside. The saint of God is asking with the Mas ter: “When the Son of man cometh, shall he find the faith on the earth?” (Lk. 18:8, R.V. margin). Nevertheless, there is a radiant prospect beyond the present darkness, and for that the trusting saint can give thanks. The Christian needs to realize anew that such an apostate state must befall the sons of men. (“The Scripture cannot be broken.” ) But when the apostasy is at its height, “ the day of Christ is at hand” (2 Thess. 2:2). If Christ’s return in triumph is very near at hand, the rapture of His saved ones is all the nearer. Before the full fury of earth’s tribulation and before He comes as the “ Sun of righteousness” (Mai. 4:2) to rule in the glory of the millennial king dom, He will come for His own: “And the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thess. 4:16,17). It is written, touching “the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and . . . our gathering to gether unto him,. . . that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first” (2 Thess. 2 :1, 3). First there will be the great apostasy, then will be made manifest the great apostate—the “man of sin” (v. 3 )—that Wicked One whom the Lord “shall con sume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming” (v. 8). “Truth, crushed to earth, shall rise again” and enter upon the eter nal years that are hers. So, with thine eye of faith— “Look, ye saints! The sight is glorious: See the ‘Man of Sorrows’ now; From the fight returned victorious, Every knee to Him shall bow. Crown Him! Crown Him! Crowns become the Victor’s brow. “ Sinners in derision crowned Him, Mocking thus the Saviour’s claim; Saints and angels crowd around Him, Own His title, praise His name. Crown Him! Crown Him! Spread abroad the Victor’s fame.” Yea, “ look, ye saints,” and be ye thank fu l! TORREY CON FERENCE • Plan to attend the Third Annual Torrey Memorial Bible Conference, to be held (D.V.) at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, January 23 to 30, 1938. Among the outstanding speakers who are expected are H. A. Ironside, of C h i c a g o , and Mark Matthews, of Seattle. Further conference informa tion will be given next month.

Though the Wicked Are in Power, Ye Can Be Thankful “Why do the nations rage . . .?” (Psa. 2:1, R.V.). Perplexed humanity today is asking that very question. For what rea son is all this hate, mass murder, and bloodshed? No one gives answer. We do know that “the kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers [Mussolini and Hitler and all their ilk] take counsel to gether, against the Lord, and against his Anointed.” We do know that true saints everywhere mourn because those in seats of power are breaking asunder social, moral, and spiritual “bands” that once our fathers respected—they have cast away the “cords” that bound them to the moor ings of a decent morality and a righteous faith. But, so it was prophesied to be (Psa. 2). But let us not despair. Lift up your heads, O people of God’s own pur chased possession! For it is immediately after just such manifest power of the devil, that “ he that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh” and “ dash . . .in pieces like a pot ter’s vessel” all the bedeviling forces of hell now prospering on the earth! Medi tate upon “the Psalm of the Messiah the Prince,” and be ye thankful. In this hour, there is “ upon the earth distress of nations” (Lk. 21:25). Every wind that blows brings to us the bitter sobbing of helpless men and women and little children that are being ground under the heels of ambitious and merciless dicta tors in their lust for power and glory. The world is horrified; but as to a way out of the terrible sink hole in which man kind finds itself, there is nothing but “ per plexity.” “The sea and the waves [are] roaring; men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth” (Lk. 21:25, 26). But, shall we hang our harps on the wil lows, and sit down beside the polluted waters of this Babylon to weep? Nay! Rather let us give thanks, for “ when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand” (v. 31). Yea, verily, " then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory” (v. 27). Even “ when [ye see] these things begin to come to pass, then look up” (v. 28), and be ye thankful! Thouqh Apostasy Is Robed Within the Churches, Ye Can Be Thankful From all sides we hear the plaint of true believers today as they bewail the apos tasy within the house of God. Bitterly they lament that, though the physical needs of the body are still a matter of ministerial concern, the soul starves for want of manna from on high. The people and their cler ical leaders “ depart from the faith, giv ing heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy” (1 Tim. 4:1 ,2 ). “ False prophets” and Though the Hearts of Men Fail, Ye Can Be Thankful

That Hurry Call . . . W h i c h brought your Doctor so unexpectedly to your door— did you ask him how much your own financial worries may have had to do with it? For it is a fact, well attested by vital statistics, that owners of Life An nuity Contracts with a forward-looking institution like Wheaton College do live years longer. Its safety is based upon the continued advance of an expanding institution. For more than 75 years, Wheaton has survived wars and depressions. Its background of successful Alumni is steadily increasing.
