A THANKSGIVING FEAST Wouldn’t it be a good plan, as we par take of our good Thanksgiving dishes, to remember to thank the Lord for the many spiritual blessings that He has given to each one who knows the Lord Jesus as Saviour? God’s Word says in Matthew 4:4: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” . Water will remind us of the Living Water, of which our Lord speaks in John 4:14 and John 7:37, 38. This tells of the blessed Hioly Spirit who comes into the heart of every one who believes upon the Lord Jesus as Saviour. Milk brings to our minds the “sincere milk of the word” spoken of in 1 Peter 2:2. The Bible is the food needed by those who are “ babes in Christ” in order that they might grow strong in the Christian life. Bread speaks to us of the Lord Jesus who is called the “ bread of life.” John 6 tells about Him as the “bread . . . from heaven.” Our autumn fruits will cause us to re member the fruit of the Spirit, which is named in Galatians 5:22, 23. Let us re peat these verses together.- Then, too, the word “meat” is used many times in God’s Word. In Hebrews 5:12-14 God’s Word is spoken of as “strong meat” which is for those who are of “ full age.” Let us remember to thank the Lord for all of His many blessings, and especially for the spiritual blessings which belong to those who are in Christ Jesus.—M. loud enough for her father to hear. She said, “ O Jesus, these idols cannot see my father. They cannot hear his prayers. It is vain to worship these false gods. Please help him to know that there is only one true God.” The next day when Shiu Lin’s father prepared to worship the idols as usual, his little daughter again knelt beside him with her face turned away from the idols. Then she prayed, “O Jesus, help my father to see that these gods are false. They have eyes that cannot see; ears that cannot hear; mouths that cannot talk;, hands that cannot move; and feet that cannot walk. Help my father to know the only true God.” Shiu Lin did not interfere with her father’s wor ship, but she always prayed aloud in her father’s presence to God. Mr. Low went on with his devotions each day. As he listened to the prayers of his little daughter, he began to think about these gods of wood and stone that cannot see, or hear, or talk. “ Perhaps they do not hear,” he thought. “And if they cannot hear, they cannot help me. But I don’t know any other way to worship.” He went out to the courtyard, sat down beneath a pine tree, and puffed at his long pipe, asking himself such questions as these: “ If these gods are all false, then why did my father and grandfather worship them? Did they- all worship gods that were false? Did my father and grandfather die without know ing of a better way?” Presently little Shiu Lin came out to the courtyard singing, “What a wonderful Saviour is Jesus, my Jesus.” She did not see her father at first, but he called her to him. “ Shiu Lin,” he said, “ who told you that the idols were false?” “The missionary told us,” she answered promptly, “but I know they are false be cause they cannot see, or hear, or talk. They are just made by men’s hands from wood and stone and other material. There is only one true God.” . “ Do you know who the true God is ?” asked this heathen father. “ Oh, yes,” replied Shiu Lin, smiling. “He is alive, even though you cannot see Him, and He hears us when we pray. He loves us so much that He gave His Son, the Lord Jesus, to die for our sins. If you will love the true God and pray to Him, He will hear you and answer your prayer.” Mr. Low decided to go to church to hear about the true God. Before long he began to realize what the Bible said was all true. The gods were false. They could not hear or answer his prayer. But still he was afraid to destroy them. One day he called his little daughter and asked, “ Shiu Lin, would you be afraid to destroy the gods?” “ Oh, no, Father,” she replied, “ they can not hurt me.” “ Perhaps the missionaries will come and help us get rid of the false gods. Then I will worship the true God.” Shiu Lin clapped her hands joyfully and hastened to tell the missionary the glad news. The day that the idols were to be destroyed was Thanksgiving Day. The missionary.told Mr. and Mrs. Low about, how Thanksgiving Day is observed in America, and a feast was planned to cele brate the occasion. As the idols were taken

from their shelves, they were carried to the courtyard where they were thrown into the fire. The old kitchen god seemed to frown at them as he was taken from the smoky walls of the kitchen and committed to the flames. Buddha, the old wooden idol that had been worshiped for many years in the Low family, soon went up in smoke. The image of the goddess of mercy groaned as it fell crackling into the fire. The big gods and the little gods were thrown into the fire and burned. What a great bonfire I And what great rejoicing, as the false gods turned to ashes. Mr. Low was so happy that he began to sing about the Lord Jesus: “ Glory to His name, Glory to His name, There to my heart was the blood applied, Glory to His name.” It was no wonder that this was a joyous Thanksgiving Day. The little group that were gathered around the fire rejoiced be cause they had found the true God. The angels of heaven rejoiced because a heathen soul had turned to Christ, the living God. And little Shiu Lin rejoiced to think that her prayer for her father had been an swered. Now she could attend the Chris tian school and hear more about the Lord Jesus. It was the happiest day they had ever spent, and, best of all, it was a joy ous Thanksgiving Day. Memory W ork : A Thanksgiving Acrostic “ Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift” (2 Cor. 9:15). “ He [Daniel] kneeled upon his knee three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime” (Dan. 6 : 10 ) . “ And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giv ing thanks to God and the Father by him” (Col. 3:17). “ Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name” (1 Chron. 29:13). “ Know ye that the Lord he is 'God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; . . . Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name” (Psa. 100:3, 4). “ So we thy people and sheep of thy pas ture will give thee thanks for ever: we will show forth thy praise to all generations” (Psa. 79:13). “ Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people” (1 Chron. 16:8). “ I thank my God upon every remem brance of you” (Phil. 1:3). “ Visit me with thy salvation; . . . that I may rejoice in the gladness o f thy na tion” (Psa. 106:4, 5). “ In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thess. 5:18). “ Now ye have consecrated yourselves unto the Lord, come near and bring sacri fices and thank offerings into the house of the Lord” (2 Chron. 29:31). “ Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light” (Col. 1 : 12 ).
