(Isa. 57:20, R. V.). There is ample proof of this truth in the unceasing tension and restlessness of modern life with its toll of nervous breakdowns and insanity. Men have not learned that rest is the gift of God. But the Psalmist understood this fact clearly when he wrote: “ He maketh me to lie down” (Psa. 23:2). It is only when we come to Christ to receive salvation by grace, and God takes complete control of the life, that we find rest. 3. "M y yoke is easy, . . . my burden is light” (v. 30). This is the word of the Lord to all those who think that the Christian life is a hard task. And the reason that He can speak thus to His own is that He bears both us and the burden that He lays upon us. It is true that God often lays upon His children burdens that none outside of Christ could possibly bear, but these burdens are intolerable only when we are trying to carry them by our own feeble strength. But when we come to see the blessed truth that God not only saves us by grace, but also keeps us saved by grace, and that in every step of the way His grace is wholly suffi cient if we will only place our trust in Him, then the burden becomes light and His yoke is easy. 4. “ There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God” (Heb. 4:9, R. V .). This Sabbath rest is in Christ, and when we enter Him by faith, we cease trying to earn salvation by our “own works” (v. 10). The Old Testament Sabbath was a type o f this, and the man who even picked up a few “ sticks” was cut off from the people (Num. 15:32). Today many are doing something worse when they break the Sabbath rest in Christ by seeking to earn their salvation in part by picking up the “sticks” of human works. Alfred Noyes told the following story: “ In the midst of the World War, an enor mous crowd gathered near Charing Cross to welcome the returning wounded British soldiers. First came those who were slightly wounded; they were bandaged, but could walk. They were greeted with cheers. Then came those who seemed drunken or insane; they suffered from shell shock. Then came the closed ambulances, containing the desperately wounded. The crowd was silent. At that moment of intense and universal stillness, two men held aloft an enormous sign, where all could see it; and on this sign was printed: ‘Come unto me, all ye that labor and are Heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’ ” Yes, only the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, can offer true rest to burdened souls among all mankind, whatever may be their particular sorrow and need.
