He wanted to tell them the way back to God. His message was: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” “Believe in me,” He told them. People believed that He worked miracles, but Jesus said that that was not enough, they must believe that He was the Son o f God, and that He had come to take their place so that they could come before a Holy God with their sinful nature taken away forever. What Jesus said to His disciples, He says to us today. If we are His friends, we must do as He commands us.

Objects: Two electric bulbs. (On one paint a red cross. When connecting the other to the current, insert a current breaker, such as is used on Christmas tree lights. This can be secured at a variety store. ) Lesson: During the Christmas season, we have seen à great number of lights—per haps more than at any other time of the year. In thinking of lights, it is well for us to remember what the Lord Jesus, the Light of the world, said about light. In Matthew 5:14, 16, we read His words to His followers: “Ye are the light of the world. . . . Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” One of these lights reminds me of those who hear and obey these words of Christ. This first one has a red cross and burns steadily. The second is like a disobedient person—it has nothing to remind you of Christ, and it lives a flashy life. Besides letting people see our good works, we should let them see our Christ, just as this first bulb reveals a cross. Lost souls are dying without the Saviour because they do not know of Christ’s power to save. They may never know, unless we let our light shine for Him. This other bulb is not steady in giving its light. It attracts attention to itself and not to the cross of Christ. The Apostle Paul had this truth in mind when he wrote in Philippians 1:21: “ For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” His life continually reminded other people of Christ. He was like the bulb with the cross, constantly revealing Christ to others. Paul had yielded himself so fully to Christ that his whole life gave praise to Christ and brought glory to God. We, as Christians, should ask ourselves whether or not our light is shining for Christ. Let’s not have a flashing life which attracts attention to self, but, instead, a steady life which reminds people of Christ, and brings glory to God.
