ficance, the gifts which the wise men brought revealed the praise and adoration which moved them to seek out the King. Gold is suggestive of the royalty of Jesus Christ; frankincense, of His divinity. Myrrh, because of its use in Oriental em balming, foretells the sufferings which the Messiah came into the world to bear for the transgressions of sinners. As we think of the Bethlehem Babe who brought new hope to humanity, our thoughts must take us on to Calvary where we bow our heads and hearts in grateful' adoration of Him who loved us enough to die for us. For this purpose He came into the world, and gave to us Christmas. The “spirit of Christmas” is rooted in the work of the cross. Without His death and resurrection, Jesus’ birth would have brought no hope or joy to the world. Be cause He justified us through His death and resurrection, we can worship a living Lord and Saviour whose Spirit leads us into all truth, and glorifies to us the mean ing of His incarnation. The “ spirit of Christmas,” a term often misused by un believers, concerns giving—the giving of our hearts to Him who gave Himself for us. Then we will long to show our gratitude by bringing our gifts, as did the wise men of old. We will have found the “ spirit of Christmas” if we bring the gold of our substance, the frankincense of our prayer life, and the myrrh of self-denying service, singing, as we lay it all on the altar for the Lord: “O worship the King, All-glorious above, And gratefully sing His wonderful love.” Every one who finds the Lord desires to express his worship and love by giving Him precious things. The Lord owns all things; all creation belongs to Him. What, then, can we give Him? The Lord has kindly arranged life so that there are some things we can give Him, some ways of expressing our love. 1. We can give Him our hearts. 2. We can give ourselves, including all we have and are. 3. W e can give our service to those for whom Christ gave Himself, ministering to the poor, the sick, the suffering, the ignorant, the lost, doing what Jesus did. “Who gives himself with his alms feeds three— Himself, his hungering neighbor, and Me.” — A mos R .
