bruised, battered, and prostrate. Sad and sorrowing, we mournfully remember the blighted days of promise. What then? Wisely we feel impelled to seek audience with the Most High. . . . In the solitude of our chamber we kneel before God, too full for words, save to broken-heartedly repeat His name over and over again; and then He draws near to us, and in mercy and grace comes “ down like rain upon the mown grass.”— R obert L ee . DECEMBER 18 Only a Voice "The voice of one crying in the wilder ness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord” (Lk. 3:4). A voice, and nothing more, Yet, oh, what wonders telling Of One, the peerless, precious Lamb, In radiant glory dwelling! A voice declaring this abroad: “ Behold, behold the Lamb of G od!” A voice: ah! let me be A voice His name repeating; Himself, the object of my love; His blood, the conscience meeting. Yes, this my cherished, happy choice, T o be as nothing but a voice. "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Col. 3:1). We need not go out of the world to be separated from it. The water spider makes his home beneath the surface of the pool, but no drop of water ever touches its soft and downy coat. From the upper world it takes down with it a globule of air, and anchors it under the water—a bubble of buoyant air which displaces the water. In its center the spider makes its nest, living beneath the waves, but breathing the air of the upper world. So can we be shut in by God’s Holy Spirit.—A. B. S impson . "Abide in me, and 1 in you” (John 15:4). Have you ever truly realized that Jesus Christ is literally within you—the divine Tenant and Occupant of the inner shrine? Do not feel obliged to dilute or water down this wondrous fact, as if it were too mar velous to be accepted in its literal force. We cannot understand it; we cannot reason it out with our poor logic; we cannot account for it; we can only sit down in amazed wonder and exclaim, “Wherefore is this come to me, that I should be a temple for the Lord God of Hosts?” And when once we can realize the literal force of “ in you,” we shall enter upon the glorious and perpetual enjoyment of “ye . . . in me.” —F. B. M eyer . DECEMBER 21 Unworthy "W e love him, because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). There is nothing which makes one love Christ so much as a sense of His love bal- DECEMBER 20 Literally True — A lbert M idlane . DECEMBER 19 Life from Above

the spirit of Calvary, is love. When they were mocking Him and deriding Him, what did He say? “ Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” That is love. He did not call down fire from heaven to consume them; there was nothing but love in His heart.—D. L. M oody . DECEMBER 14 From Burning Hearts "He was a burning and a shining light” (John 5:35). John was a burning light, having been filled with the Spirit from birth. But he was also a shining light. There are many lamps which are burning, but they give no clear shining; the light is dim or so ob structed and hidden, that nothing emerges. And just so with many believers. Shining should be the the constant result of burning, and this was so true of John, the shining light, that men were “willing . . . to rejoice in his” light.” God grant there may be a clear shining from each of our burning hearts, that we may ever be God’s beacons in the darkness.— N orthcote D eck . Prayer is, after all, the confession of our dependence on a higher Power. And we cannot fail to realize how essential prayer is in the building up of ourselves as temples of God. For it is only when we make a conscious effort to build Christian character that we discover how completely we are dependent on the Holy Spirit of God. How certain to fail is any effort at self-reforma tion ! No, we shall only find power to hold us up, and keep us up, by praying in the Holy Ghost.— D onald D avidson . DECEMBER 16 Growing Noiselessly "There was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was building” (1 Ki. 6:7). Not less wonderful than the temple itself was the manner in which it grew. The people of Jerusalem were awed to see it rise so silently before their eyes. A miracle no less amazing is the growth of character, which proceeds amid the noise and tumult of daily circumstances. Character grows noiselessly. Away in the quarries, the stones were hewn, but in the temple itself was no commotion. On the anvil of time, hammering continues ceaselessly, but in the soul is divine stillness. Only the essence of experi ences is distilled into character. —Life of Faith. DECEMBER 17 Bruised and Healed "H e shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth” (Psa. 72:6). Circumstances at times seem cruel. There is much in life that works like the scythe and the cutting machine. As the grass, we are flourishing and progressing famously, and then the visitation of a mysterious Providence comes along, and we are left DECEMBER 15 How to Build “ But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost” (Jude 20).
