anced with a sense of our unworthiness of it. It is sweet to think that Christ loves us; but, oh, to remember that we are black “ as the tents of Kedar,” and yet He loves us ! This is a thought which may well wean us from everything else beside. . . . I have heard say that the depth of a Scotch loch corresponds with the height of thé surrounding mountains. So deep thy sense of obligation for pardoned sin, so high thy love to Him who has forgiven thee. — C harles H addon S purgeon . DECEMBER 22 Spiritual Laziness “Men ought always to pray and not to be lazy” (Lk. 18:1, a Cantonese version). That truth quaintly denies the world’s thoughts about the man who spends much time in prayer. In the estimation of heaven he is laboring in a sphere where physical values take a secondary place . . . . and that which concerns the purpose and will of God is focused on the accomplishment of tasks that lie outside of the scope of earthly activities. In the kingdom of' the Spirit, it is the man who prays whose success is most marked . . . “Prayer,” says Dr. Pierson, “is the most potential and the most neglected of all the forces at the control of the dis ciple. It is, like electricity, at once the great illuminator, messenger, motive power and therapeutic. It is encouraged by promises more numerous and more absolute than attach to any other one act and privilege of the believer’s life.” — A ndrew B orland . Dan Crawford once wrote of a native guide who was leading him along a new trail one day. Being somewhat dubious of the direction, he asked this proud-as-Punch guide of his just where they were going. “ The way?” smiled the native. “You want to know the way? / am the way I.” pointing proudly to his breast, where the hidden knowledge was locked up. Says Crawford, “ I took my text from that, sat down with him in the forest on a fallen tree, and told him of the Blessed One who could truly say, ‘I am the Way that never was a way until I passed along it.’ ”— G eoffrey R. K ing . DECEMBER 24 In the Lord "Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his mighf’ (Eph. 6:10). Weigh the words well. Let them not pass as a mere sacred phrase, a mere formula of the religious dialect. They are concerned with the central facts of our spiritual life and power. “ In the Lord” lies your secret, our secret, of love, and peace, and joy; of victory and progress; of heavenly temper in earthly duty; of all we need for life and work in His name. Union with our glorious Redeemer and Head, wrought in us by that Holy Spirit through whom we were born again; communion with Christ Jesus, wrought in us by that same Spirit as He leads us on—all this lies hidden “in the Lord.”— H a n d le y C. G. M oule . DECEMBER 23 One True Way "Jesus saitk unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).
