self, everything that is of Satan in my heart and life. He will make us willing to trust Him! Do you see why I feel it will be such a wonderful thing for some of us here tonight if we have the risen Lord horizoned for us? Difficulty! Disappoint ment! Depression! Doubt! Defeat! Does that touch your need?— G eoffrey R . K in g . DECEMBER 29 Our Helper “ The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities” (Rom. 8:26). Our infirmity calls in the help of the Spirit of God. The word “ help” may here be translated “to lay hold together.” The Spirit of God comes into partnership with you to lay hold at the very point of failure, so that your infirmity becomes just the place where the Spirit of God can grip. It does not matter how great the intellect nor how strong the will, the flesh smites and lays a man low. There is only one possibility of victory over the self life and that is the gripping of the Holy Ghost at the point of weakness.—From The Conquest of Life by W . Mallis* DECEMBER 30 As a River “ But there the glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby” (Isa. 33:21). On the bosom of the Thames, Humber, Mersey, or Clyde, float mighty vessels, borne up quite safely and easily. What the strongest hoist or crane could not do, the rivers easily accomplish. One of the hardest lessons the would-be swimmer has to learn is to resign himself to the watery element, allowing the river to bear him up. That is one of the earliest lessons the young Chris tian has to master. Master —do we ever master it? How slow we are to wholly trust Him! Let us cultivate the true and joyful spirit of resignation. Let the first act of faith become the habit of our lives. — R obert L ee . “ Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark . . . in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3:13, 14). Backward! Across another year of grace, With thankfulness, I see Sunshine and shadow, both have found a place, Just as it pleased Thee. Forward! And yet I cannot see the way, It is not clear to me, But Thou shalt mark it clearly, day by day, Just as it pleaseth Thee. Homeward! I’ll journey on at Thy behest, Until Thy face I see, For when the journey’s done I’ll enter rest, Just when it pleaseth Thee. — J. “ And when they had opened their treas ures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh” (Matt. 2:11). Bring Him thy precious things And lay them at His feet; The gold of love, the hope that springs

The unknown ways to meet. Bring Him thy lovely things: The joy that conquers care, The faith that trusts and sings, The frankincense of prayer. Bring Him thy bitter things: The myrrh of grief and fears, The aching heart that stings With pain of unshed tears. These for thy gifts to Him; And for His gifts to thee, The comfort of His steadfast love, His tender sympathy.

DECEMBER 26 Accomplished

“Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accom plished, that her iniquity is pardoned” (Isa. 40:2). The message of God, not only to Israel of old but also to His church, is this: “Her warfare is accomplished.” In His death, our Lord Jesus Christ paid the penalty of our sin; therefore the iniquity of our hearts has been pardoned. If so be that we are “in him,” the strife between our hearts and God has been brought to an end, and we are at peace with Him. If there is still any conflict between ourselves and Him, any condition of unrest, it is not that He wills it so, but that we persist in continuing the warfare. The desire of God for us is that we should abide in joyous fellowship with Him.— H erbert F. S tevenson . DECEMBER 27 He Wants to Come “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you" (John 14:18). The Lord wants to come to you, to enter the inmost sanctuary of your being, to dwell in your heart by faith. He wants to come to you for the complete rectification and enrichment of your inner life, that you may know, day by day, victory and rest. There is no escape for your comfortless condition in any other way. The very apostles would have been comfortless and desolate unless, in the blessing of Pentecost, Christ had been enthroned at the very center of their being. The Lord wants to come to you just like that.—F. S. W ebster . DECEMBER 28 Complete Victory “But thanks be to God, which givetk us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 15:57). The risen Saviour has the power and the willingness to conquer everything evil, of the world, and of the flesh, and of the devil, in your life and mine. Listen! He will do it every time we want Him to. Every time I am willing to turn to Him in trustful obedience, He will conquer sin,
