Azaleas on the Spanish Steps Every spring, from around the last week of April until around the first week of May, you will find the Spa- nish Steps covered in Azaleas. This spring tradition dates back more than 80 years. Once they stop flowering, these azaleas are usually returned to the city nurseries until the next spring. Rome’s famous Spanish Steps, which were built in the Rococo style between 1723 and 1726, le- ad from the Piazza di Spagna squ- are to the French Trinita dei Monti monastery church. There are 135 steps and three different terra- ces representing the Holy Trinity. The name can be somewhat con- fusing, as the construction of the steps was actually commissioned by the French (Louis XII). The squ- are at the base of the steps, the Piazza di Spagna, was the site of the Spanish embassy during the 17 th century, hence the name. The official name of this staircase is Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti.
