INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

DWAYNE JOHNSON, AKA THE ROCK I know what it’s like to fight for every penny Strength isn’t only in muscles, but in not giving up, in believing in yourself and learning every day, says the world’s highest paid actor D wayne Johnson is set to run for U.S. president in 2032, but not because he wants to follow in the footsteps of another strongman actor - Arnold Schwarzeneg- ger. He is using the opportunity to re- veal the secrets of his extraordinary life, which he does with a fair amount of self-deprecating humour. He might currently be the world’s high- est-paid actor, but he doesn’t shy away from talking candidly about his family, childhood, high school in Pennsylvania or college football years at the Universi- ty of Miami. Johnson says that, despite his experi- ences being larger than life, he stands firmly on the ground. You have the chance to see for yourself if that’s really the case in the series The Rock, which we’re watching on the Star Channel, in a story that combines action, emotions and his trademark style. We start by asking him how he would describe the series to those who’ve yet to see it... - First of all, this isn’t just a story about me – it’s a story about grow- ing up, about the obstacles you have to overcome, about the people who shape you. It holds a lot of sincere emotions that can only be recognised by the heart, as well as humour and inspiration. We’ve all struggled at some point with our identity and who we want to become, and I think view- ers will easily relate to that theme of the story of The Rock.

So, there is a personal connection? - Absolutely. This is a TV project in- spired by my life and the people who shaped me. It’s my way of showing grat- itude to those who helped me become the man I am today. My family, my friends, my mentors – they are all part of this story. Growing up isn’t easy, es- pecially when you come from an envi- ronment in which you have to fight for every opportunity. I wanted to convey that struggle, but also the hope that an- ything’s possible, provided you have the right vision. Some things were quite emotional for you, and thus not so easy? - Some scenes were difficult for me, be- cause they transported me back to my childhood and reminded me of mo- ments that weren’t always easy. Espe- cially the scenes with the family – there were moments where I really struggled to stay composed, because they were too personal for me. But I think that’s what makes the series special, that hon- esty and emotion that we introduced. On the other hand, you remain very strong physically, like most of the characters you play. - They say that strength comes from within and I believe that. It’s not about physical strength, but about how much you can endure, how much you can grow, and how much you can help oth- ers grow. That’s the message I wanted to send through this series.

The themes of struggle, persistence and self-confidence generally dominate your films and shows... - That’s the essence of my life. I know what it’s like when you have nothing, when you fight for every penny, when you don’t know what tomorrow will bring. I was there. That’s why I want, through my work, to inspire people to never give up. If you work hard, if you have a vision, if you believe in your- self, there’s no obstacle you can’t over- come.” You’re known for your positive energy and motivation. How do you manage to maintain that strength and balance between your career and private life? - That comes from gratitude. I awak- en every morning and am grateful for the life I have. Of course, it’s not al- ways easy, but I find balance in my family, in training, in love for what I do. My working day is often crazy - travelling, filming, commitments, but I return to my family whenever I can. That’s what keeps me grounded. And, of course, training. Training is my out- let, my meditation, my way of clearing my mind and regaining focus. To conclude, what would you say to fans of the series The Rock? - Be true to yourself, don’t give up and always strive for something bigger. And, of course, enjoy the series!
