IZLOŽBA / EXHIBITION „Future of Melancholia“

T he exhibition entitled The Future of Melancholia, created in collabo- ration between Belgrade’s Museum of Contemporary Art and Graz’s HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark, is on show at the Milica Zorić and Rodoljub Čolaković Lega- cy Gallery and the MoCAB Salon until the beginning of May. This provides an oppor- tunity to get acquainted with works of con- temporary Austrian artists, as well as sur- realism pioneer Suzanne Wenger, whose creative work represents a bridge between artistic positions of the past and the pres- ent. This part of the exhibition offers a new evaluation of her legacy through a series of works that explore inner worlds and in- ner visions deeply. The MoCAB Salon ex- hibition provides an opportunity for visi- tors to immerse themselves in the worlds of artist Filip Timišl, who addresses the phenomenon of melancholy that’s evident among the younger generation, exploring feelings of insecurity in confronting the challenges of the times in which we live. Timišl encourages us to ponder the future in the present moment. Exhibition curators note that it consid- ers melancholy as a spiritual state that re- flects the complexity of the contemporary juncture. This phenomenon simultaneous- ly represents a reaction to the challenges of populist tendencies around the world, expressed through withdrawal from polit- ical and public life into the private sphere. The exhibition pays special attention to the ways artists explore this anxiety and intro- spectiveness, which simultaneously reflects the internal conflict between tradition and progress. Artists often turn to the surre- al and the dreamlike, which they use as a means of reflecting on the relationship between their inner feelings and the state of the world that surrounds them. The re- sulting works follow narrative structures that are on occasion dark and unfathoma- ble, but that are nevertheless infused with humour and hope.
