ESTATE PLANNING AND TAXES PLANNING AHEAD Estate Planning | Probate | Guardianships for Your Life Chapters

Only 26% of Americans have an estate plan in place. For people with over $500,000 in assets, that number goes up to more than 50%. Estate planning is important, and for those with larger estates, it is crucial. Proper estate planning helps organize your financial affairs so your heirs are not left with a mess. Good planning is a gift to your heirs. Estate planning includes paperwork and people. You want to choose the best possible people to handle your financial affairs when you can no longer do so yourself. You also want to consider a good financial advisor and a tax accountant. Indeed, as we are starting spring, taxes are top of mind. “NEVADA DOES NOT HAVE A STATE ESTATE TAX OR INHERITANCE TAX.” Nevada does not have a state estate tax or inheritance tax. We are still subject to the federally enforced estate tax. Thankfully, this only applies to rather large estates. You are not subject to federal estate tax if your estate is valued at less than $13.99 million. Keep in mind that this threshold changes from year to year, and it is unclear at this time whether the tax legislation enacted in 2017 will be extended.

One way to shield assets for estate tax is to use the annual gift exclusion. As of 2025, you can gift up to $19,000 per recipient yearly without any gift tax. Gifting more than this amount in a single year could require filing a gift tax return. Also, paying the tuition or medical bills of anyone you want – if made directly to the school or health care provider – exempts these gifts from taxes.

WOOD YOU BE-LEAF IT?! Getting Outside Can Help You Feel Better

Many of us neglect our mental health because we’ve desensitized ourselves to stress, instead teaching ourselves to “white knuckle” through the day. However, if you knew a better way to manage your stress, you could loosen the reigns more, right? Well, when was the last time you spent some time outside? Whether it’s going on a hike, tending to your garden, or riding a bike, research reveals the positive effects on your mental health of spending time outdoors. Improved Overall Mood Everyone occasionally falls into a “funk.” And while it’s normal to experience that mood at times, it shouldn’t be a constant feeling. A 2010 study revealed that exercising

in nature for just five minutes improved self-esteem and overall mood. Experiencing nature often makes people feel grounded and more connected to the Earth, leading to feelings of happiness and a sense of purpose. A separate study revealed that participants who went on nature walks had increased positive emotions after the walk. Positive Brain Stimulation When you spend time outdoors, taking in the sunlight and fresh air, your body releases the feel-good hormone serotonin in return. Many antidepressant medications work by inhibiting reabsorption of this key neurotransmitter. Additionally, sunlight activates melatonin

release, which helps regulate our internal clock. The more sunlight we get each day, the more our bodies know when it’s time to go to bed. Enhanced Focus and Attention Whether at home or in the office, our brains can go a mile a minute, focusing on everything except the task at hand. While you’re supposed to be working on a PowerPoint presentation, your brain thinks about the new tire you need and the pile of dirty dishes in the sink. A 2020 study found that spending time in nature can calm the mind, allowing for enhanced focus. Further studies on outdoor play settings stated that children with ADHD were calmer after playing in green spaces than in other settings.

Understanding More DO YOU HAVE YOUR END-OF-LIFE PLANS READY?

Talk with your loved ones. At some point, you should sit down with your loved ones and explain your wishes to them, whatever they may be. It can be hard to open up. When everyone is on the same page, the process is less stressful. If your loved ones know what you want and don’t want, then it helps them to know they are following your wishes. Then they may be able to step into a more peaceful place and provide words and presence that are comforting when the time comes. Get your estate plan in order. Establishing and maintaining an estate plan is important. You can

name someone as your financial and health care powers of attorney. That way, someone you trust has the legal authority to make decisions for you. Connect with others. After you have your legal documents in place, do what you can to nurture and develop the relationships of those named in your documents, and others as well. Legal documents are important, but good relationships make it even better. Remember, even something simple can touch hearts. Perhaps just “I was thinking about you and was wondering how you are doing?”

Often, a challenging situation facing a family member or friend leads us to think about our own situation. I frequently hear that the reason someone came to me for health care planning is because of a situation a friend or family member faced. Do you want a do-not-resuscitate order? At what point do you want to consider transitioning into an assisted living facility? Here are a few tips.

For culinary creators worldwide, earning a Michelin star is like winning an Olympic gold medal. Chefs with excellent kitchen skills and outstanding customer service receive the honor. Late French chef Joël Robuchon holds the world record with 31, while TV star Gordon Ramsay rose to international fame and marked his hot-tempered journey to TV stardom by achieving 17 stars for his many restaurants. But how did this legendary distinction in the cooking world begin? If you’ve ever had the pleasure of dining at a Michelin-honored establishment, you have the automotive industry to thank. As its name implies, the star system was the brainchild of the Michelin tire company. To help inspire consumers to drive more — and increase the demand for tire purchases — it began publishing “The Michelin Guide” in France in 1900. The publication included maps, tips on tire care, and recommendations for hotels and restaurants along popular French travel routes. As the guide grew in popularity, the company expanded its content to include anonymous restaurant reviews. In 1926, it introduced “the Michelin star” to recognize the eateries it considered the best in the country. Today, the bestselling publication reviews more than 40,000 restaurants across three continents. Only 146 restaurants worldwide — or less than 1% of those rated by the guide — have received three Michelin stars. In Ramsay’s mind, receiving that rare level remains the ultimate benchmark in his profession. As he stated in a 2024 article in Parade, “As a soccer player, I wanted an FA Cup winner’s medal. As an actor, you want an Oscar. As a chef, it’s three Michelin stars; there’s no greater than that.” MICHELIN MAGIC The Mark of Culinary Mastery

CODY’S CORNER SPRING IS IN THE AIR!

There’s always excitement in the air when the calendars flip over to March, and that’s because spring is almost here! This is one of the best times of the year for us dogs because we can enjoy the outdoors without feeling too cold or hot. And our beloved people start romping outdoors more, too!

Our beloved family is making a trip to Carlsbad. My Mom talks about growing up on the beach, how she loves the feel of mud underneath her paws – oops, I mean feet! Just thinking about how much fun waves and mud sound. On one trip they made to the beach, a seagull tried to take their bag of popcorn, and Mom ran along the sand to recover the popcorn! I will not let any seagulls take our tasty treats. On another trip, Ella tripped and spilled her juice smoothie along the boardwalk. Generous people jumped right up and got her another one. The kids still talk about those nice people.

While visiting new or familiar destinations can be fun, it’s also great for mental health. Taking time away from your daily stressors can help you relax and refocus your mind on the most important things in life. Plus, you’ll be making memories to last a lifetime! You’re sure to do something you’ll remember fondly for years to come. Even if you’re not interested in going somewhere, I’m sure the furry friends in your family will love any extra time outdoors they get to spend with you!
