A Note from Don Lough, Jr. As we enter the spring season, I find myself reflecting on God’s incredible faithfulness over the past 85 years. From the earliest days of Word of Life, when Jack Wyrtzen and Harry Bollback first dreamed of reaching young people for Christ, to the global ministry we see today, God has continu- ally done more than we could have imagined. This milestone reminds us that our story is not about buildings, programs, or even the passing of time – it’s about lives transformed by the power of the gospel. For 85 years, God has used your prayers, partnership, and generosity to expand this ministry and bring young people to Himself. In this issue of The Word of Life Experience , you’ll journey through the past 85 years of our ministry, while also looking ahead with a renewed vision. God’s work is far from finished. Whether it’s through camps, Bible Institutes, or local church partnerships, we are committed to seeing every young person take their next step with Jesus.

85 YEAR CELE BRA TION
EIGHTY-FIVE YEAR CELEBRATION
85 years ago, a loaf of bread cost just eight cents. The first McDonald’s wouldn’t open for another 15 years. Radios were the center of family entertain- ment, and people gathered around to hear updates about World War II, which had just begun. Computers were still decades away, and the idea of communicating instantly across the globe would have seemed like science fiction. The culture of the 1940s was slower-paced, yet filled with uncertainty and the need for hope. It was in this context, in 1940, that Jack Wyrtzen founded Word of Life. Jack was selling insurance at the time and broadcasting on a small radio station, but his heart was set on something bigger – reaching young people with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. What started as small rallies soon grew into large-scale evangelistic crusades, with thousands gathering to hear the gospel. By 1944, Jack was filling Madison Square Garden, sharing the hope of Christ.
4
Building a Ministry That Stands the Test of Time Jack’s vision for ministry didn’t stop with rallies. After being inspired by a camp he visited in England, Jack pursued the idea of establishing a retreat where young people could encounter Christ in a deeper way. In a bold step of faith, he purchased an island that was listed for $125,000 – negotiating it down to just $25,000. With limited resources, Jack creatively repurposed army surplus equipment and transformed a carriage house into a dining hall. This resource- fulness marked the early days of Word of Life’s camps and set the stage for decades of ministry impact.
by lifelong friendships and deep spiri- tual growth.
Today, the Bible Institute operates much differently in terms of structure and has expanded its reach and impact, with campuses in New York, Florida, and around the world. Modern facilities and technology reflect the cultural shifts of the times, but the core mission remains the same: to equip students to know, live, and share their faith.
Madison Square Garden Word of Life Youth for Christ Rally in the 40s
The Bible Institute: Then and Now In 1970, the first American Word of Life Bible Institute opened, modeled after the original campus in São Paulo, Brazil. Early on students experienced a struc- tured environment designed to foster spiritual growth and discipline. Meals had assigned seating, dress codes were strict, and media access was virtually nonexistent. Students spent their days in classes taught by leaders like Jack Wyrtzen, Harry Bollback, and Dr. Charles Ryrie, sitting on wooden benches with tablet arms. The Bible Institute was founded on a simple yet
Word of Life Inn
Over the last 85 years, Word of Life has grown from those first rallies into a global ministry spanning more than 80 countries. The cultural land- scape has changed dramatically. In 1940, families gathered around radios; today, young people hold the world in their hands through smart- phones. Back then, young people heard singular voices of truth through their communi- ties or families; today, they’re inundated with conflicting messages about truth, identity, and purpose. Through these changes, Word of Life has continually adapted its methods to meet the needs of each generation. Camps remain a cornerstone of the ministry, providing life-changing envi- ronments where young people expe- rience faith in action. Digital evange- lism, sports outreach, and short-term missions are among the many avenues Word of Life engages today’s youth while staying rooted in biblical truth.
Word of Life Camps in the 70s
By 1953, Word of Life acquired the Inn, followed by the Ranch, expanding its reach to more youth and families. In 1969, the ministry moved its headquar- ters to Schroon Lake, New York, where it continued to grow and innovate. Snowcamp, launched by Paul Bubar, became a staple for youth ministry during the winter months, and Word of Life Youth Camps established two core pillars: fun and life change.

profound truth: “You can’t know God’s will without knowing God’s Word.”
The rigorous schedule included Chris- tian Service Assignments and job duties, which built character and taught the value of serving others. Despite the challenges, many students look back on their time at the Bible Institute as one of the best years of their lives, marked

While the methods of ministry have evolved, one thing has remained constant: the power of the gospel. The message that trans- formed lives in 1940 continues to bring life, hope, and salvation today. Looking to the Future: MOBILIZE 2030 As Word of Life celebrates its 85th anniver- sary, we look forward to an exciting future shaped by our MOBILIZE 2030 goals. MOBILIZE 2030 looks ahead to the years 2026 through 2030, outlining how we believe God is guiding our global ministry. Building on our five core values – Bible-Cen- tered, Gospel-Driven, Youth-Focused, Disciple-Making, and High Energy – MOBI- LIZE 2030 sets strategic goals to expand our reach and deepen our impact. With a Bible-centered approach, we aim to increase the availability and integration of the Quiet Time family of products, making them accessible to all ages and people connected to our ministries. Our gospel-driven mission will creatively expand our reach to seven million indi- viduals annually, ensuring that Word of Life-generated resources are available to new believers around the world. Focused on youth, we will grow and expand our youth missions in all regions, placing a particular emphasis on short-term trips and internships, and expanding our ministry outreach into two new countries or geographical areas in each region. Through a disciple-making lens, we will launch a Next Steps plan, offering clear pathways for organic ministry growth. By setting and communicating clearly defined numeric and team-building goals throughout the entirety of our ministry, we aim to inspire and energize our staff, volunteers, partners, and partic- ipants, ultimately driving high-energy ministry growth for generations to come.
As we look to the future, the mission remains unshaken: to see every young person take their next step with Jesus. Our commitment to this vision, grounded in biblical truth and fueled by passion, will continue to propel us forward into new territories and new oppor- tunities to impact young lives for Christ.

Reaching This Generation with the gospel
From the very beginning, Word of Life’s heartbeat has been to equip young people to share the gospel with their own generation in creative and relevant ways. Take a look at two amazing avenues in which the gospel has been carried! t h e G o s p e l
Soccer Ministry One of the most unexpected platforms for the gospel has been the soccer field. When Word of Life Bible Insti- tute hosted Central Maine Community College, the eventual USCAA national champions, it was more than just a soccer match. Despite a hard-fought 2–0 loss, both teams gathered at midfield after the game, where a WOLBI player shared his testimony, followed by a clear gospel presentation and prayer. Instead of heading out for their seven- hour drive, Central Maine’s players stayed to talk with WOLBI’s team and coaches – some for nearly an hour. By the end of the night, four players made decisions for Christ, and three expressed interest in attending WOLBI. The impact didn’t end there. At the conference tournament, the teams reconnected, cheering each other on in their respective semifinal matches. Though WOLBI lost their game 3–2, Central Maine’s athletic director shared, "You guys do things the right way. I’ve never seen a classier team." This unforgettable moment was a testament to WOLBI’s Christ-cen- tered sportsmanship and bold witness, proving that sports can be a powerful tool for eternal impact. This season, WOLBI’s soccer team shared the gospel with 222 opposing players, and 13 made decisions for Christ. Over the past three years, more than 40 players have come to faith through the team’s ministry. Soccer has become more than a game; it’s a platform for life-changing impact as the team faithfully represents Christ both on and off the field.

Reaching This Generation with the gospel
Social Media "Skibidi Rizz." Two seemingly mean- ingless “brain rot” words (as today’s generation calls them) that surpris- ingly became a tool for eternal impact. Halfway through the 2024 summer camp season at The Ridge, Word of Life’s middle school camp in New York, a Bible Institute student who was serving as the camp's Social Media Specialist, created an Insta- gram reel poking fun at adults using middle school slang. The reel went viral and gained over 6 million views. A couple of weeks later, the student who created the reel was standing on The Island boat dock chatting with a friend about the reel. Another woman on the dock overheard the conversa- tion and asked her if she had made that reel. When she said yes, the woman shared that her son had seen the reel on his Instagram feed, looked into Word of Life, and signed up for camp on The Island (the summer camp for his age group). During his time there that week, he heard the gospel and accepted Jesus as his Savior. The mom was now standing in line at The Island boat dock, getting ready to cross the lake to watch her son be baptized. 85 years ago, no one could have imag- ined a social media post or a soccer game as platforms for sharing the gospel. Yet, both avenues and so many others perfectly align with Jack Wyrt- zen’s vision when he said, “It is the responsibility of each generation to reach their generation for Christ.” Let these stories serve as a reminder to take every moment, every platform, and every connection as an opportunity to share the gospel with those around you.

Alumni – You Can Invest in the Next Generation!
I wanted to strengthen my faith before entering a secular environment. I believe WOLBI has prepared me exactly for this. "
22
As an alumnus of Word of Life Bible Institute, you’ve experienced the life-changing impact of a year or two immersed in God’s Word, surrounded by a Christ-centered community and equipped for ministry and life.
I realized I needed to fully commit my life to the Lord and take my faith more seriously. I returned the next summer as part of Camp Crew, which led me to choose WOLBI. God made it clear that this was the right next step for me. Though I was initially accepted into McGill's Occupa- tional Therapy program, I prayed and trusted God to open the door for WOLBI. Miraculously, my deferral request was granted, allowing me to attend the Bible Institute and keep my spot in the program for next year. I wanted to strengthen my faith before entering a secular envi- ronment. I believe WOLBI has prepared me exactly for this. I've learned so much about God's purpose for my life and how to live to please Him. I feel more equipped to face the challenges ahead, ready to live out my faith in a world that needs it."
Now, you have the unique opportunity to help others take that same step.
What is this unique opportunity? The Alumni Encouragement Award! As an alumnus, you can encourage a student to attend Word of Life Bible Institute and give them a $750 scholarship toward their tuition! How Alumni Inspired Grace’s Decision to Attend the Bible Institute “I grew up in a loving Christian home where both my parents knew Jesus. As a pastor's kid, I was involved in church activities like Awana, youth group, and Sunday school. My mom homeschooled me through ninth grade, shaping my early education at home. I came to know the Lord at age 4, after asking my dad how to get to heaven. He shared the gospel with me, and I made the decision to accept Jesus as my Savior. I grew up hearing about Word of Life because both my mom and grand- parents were Bible Institute students. My grandparents made a big life change to attend WOLBI, which had a lasting impact on our family's lives. I first attended The Island in 2023, and that experience deeply changed me.

E5M: A Global Gospel Initiative
South Korea: Leaders and Students Transformed by the Gospel
Launching in April 2025, Word of Life’s Eternity 5 Million (E5M) is an unprecedented initiative to share the gospel with at least 5 million people in just 30 days. This global effort is mobilizing ministries across every country where Word of Life is active, with strategies involving churches, individuals, and media partners. The E5M Global Task Force has spent months preparing for this monumental outreach. We invite you to partner with us to share the hope of Christ with millions.
The Word of Life team in South Korea celebrated an impactful season of ministry this fall. A highlight was the Core Training conducted at two churches, equipping youth leaders to confi- dently understand and share the gospel. Remarkably, at one church, seven out of 20 leaders trusted Christ as their Savior during the training. This spiritual transformation culminated in an outreach event where five students made decisions for Christ. Beyond training, the team also engaged through Jr. SYME, Bible Clubs, and alumni gatherings, reaching hearts with the hope of the gospel.

Papua New Guinea: Rugby Outreach Inspires a Community
Amazon River: Celebrating 20 Years of Ministry Growth
A simple rugby game turned into an extraordinary outreach event in Papua New Guinea. Forty rugby players joined a local Word of Life outreach, and soon, over 70 onlookers gathered to hear the gospel. God moved powerfully as more than 20 individuals placed their faith in Christ. The event highlighted the way sports and fellowship can be a bridge to sharing the message of Jesus, transforming lives, and creating connections in the community.
In the heart of the Amazon, Word of Life celebrated 20 years of ministry through Seara. This year was marked by incredible milestones: expansion to two new river regions, the graduation of 36 students from the Floating Seminary, the ordination of five pastors, and the construction of new missionary homes and churches. Additionally, the ministry held camps for youth, hosted medical and dental missions, and upgraded solar systems for missionaries. Daily discipleship and Bible studies continue to impact countless lives, demonstrating God’s faithfulness in the Amazon.

Knowledgeable, Patient, and Kind: Estate Planning Made Simple
Best of all, this confidential service is provided free of charge and without obligation to friends of Word of Life.
Estate planning is often misunderstood as a complicated process meant only for those with significant assets. The truth is, everyone should have a plan. That’s why Word of Life has partnered with PhilanthroCorp, a trusted ministry resource, to help friends of the ministry achieve their estate planning goals. If you’re unsure how to create an effective plan, PhilanthroCorp can guide you through a process that reflects your values and desires.
The main factor that got us moving with PhilanthroCorp was a recommendation from
a trusted source at Word of Life Fellowship. Once we began, the process opened up a valuable conversation with our children about our wishes. Through fulfilling and healthy discussions, we realized how imperative it was to have a plan in place. PhilanthroCorp was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and kind. Even when it took us a little longer to gather everything we needed, they were tremendously understanding and accommodating.”
