Pet of the Month We all love our pets, big or small. Send in their photo to make them known to all. Include a brief description about your family pet to Tami@villagerpublications.com, and below are some handy tips from your local vet. Meet Winnie.
Winnie is our beloved Golden Retriever who just celebrated her fourth birthday on March 5th this year. She loves playing fetch and dress-up with her niece and going for walks. She also loves everyone at the Kilworth Animal Clinic. They spoiled her with treats and gave her a new tennis ball when she was there on her birthday. Winnie loves new tennis balls. However, she peels the outer layer off within a day though. But chewing the ball is much better than chewing our shoes! Golden Retrievers are known for chewing shoes. Winnie is a wonderful addition to our family. We all love her very much. Fur Parents: Peter and Gillian Feenstra

Parasite Prevention by Sydney L., Veterinary Technician
Fleas and Ticks are common external parasites that are dormant in cold weather, usually during the winter months in Ontario. Fleas and Ticks become active in any weather, four degrees Celsius and above. Recently, we’ve been experiencing climate change with mild, warmer weather during the winter months, meaning our pets are potentially at risk year-round for picking up these unwanted parasites. In Ontario, a few common species of ticks we have are the Blacklegged Tick AKA Deer Tick, the American Dog Tick, and most recently, the Lone Star Tick, which originated in Texas and have hitchhiked their way to Ontario, Canada on migratory birds. A few diseases that ticks may transmit include but are not limited to: Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis and Alpha-Gal Syndrome. Elevated levels of rainfall and humid weather during the warm summer months provide the ideal habitat for mosquitoes. The mosquito population is on the rise resulting in Heartworm disease becoming prevalent in Ontario. Heartworm disease can be transmitted from the infected mosquito to your pet at temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius and above.
