FROM THE INDUSTRY

bodies create unified, open and vendor- agnostic SDA solutions that will deliver in the long run.

By integrating products and services that use open standards that are not controlled by any one vendor, the network is more likely to become a multi-technology and multi-vendor ecosystem. The operator is then gifted with more flexibility and can choose from a catalogue of best-of-breed solutions to deploy into their network. Vendor equipment must support disaggregation, automation and network management needs. OLTs, ONUs and CPE from all locations in the operator’s network must follow key standards from the industry’s leading bodies, such as Broadband Forum, Linux Foundation, OpenWRT and prpl foundation. This is to ensure the most complex elements of the network – such as the BNG that aggregates traffic from many subscribers and routes it to the operator’s network – can maintain a seamless connection. By combining these building blocks and key initiatives, the industry can create unified, vendor-agnostic and comprehensive access solutions. Ultimately, combining the four key elements of the solution with the initiatives and work of the industry’s key standards

n Standardised disaggregation of BNGs, allowing virtual instances to run on access sites;

n CPE that allows disaggregation and follows open-community initiatives.

A new horizon for the broadband industry

Adopting key industry standards can lead to increased flexibility for PON deployments and decrease the time to market for multi-vendor ONU and OLT interoperability. Vendor lock-in can be mitigated, providing operators with greater choice of products and services.

Disaggregated access solutions have the potential to drive the next big breakthrough for the broadband industry. Only SDA-based infrastructure is able to protect fibre investment from vendor lock-in and supply-chain disruption while cutting OPEX with automation and simplification during the next few decades of fibre-network roll outs and dependency. The level of maturity is encouraging service providers to implement SDA as a means to lower their expenses, expedite innovation, shorten time to market and harness the advantages of multi-vendor ecosystems.

The need for industry collaboration

FTTH markets and network operators across the globe are bracing themselves for the consolidation of services to streamline network management practices and unlock new investment opportunities. For a seamless and successful path to SDA capabilities that can enable this consolidation, it is essential for the industry to educate each other, and for communities and standardisation bodies to work together to maximise their knowledge.
