PROPERLY MANAGING YOUR NECK PAIN AND STRESS

Stress is something we all feel with increased demands from life, work, and school. Whether it be studying for your next exam, meeting your work deadline, or figuring out what to make your family for dinner, the majority of us know all too well the tightening and aching that can start to brew in our necks and upper backs as we try to meet the pressures of everyday life. a plan of care including neck stretching, strengthening of postural muscles, and ergonomic assessment of aggravating activities can be implemented to begin your recovery. At Excel, we value manual therapy such as Graston techniques, joint mobilization, and manual stretching to decrease soft tissue restrictions and spinal stiffness to decrease your pain. Your PT will be able to teach you exercises to reduce your pain throughout the day and during stressful situations. Frequent stretching of your upper trapezius and other cervical musculature are all effective treatments of neck pain due to stress. In order to stretch your upper trapezius, you can stand or sit while tilting your ear to your shoulder. If the stretch is pain-free, hold for 15-30 seconds and perform as needed to decrease pain and tightness. For a deeper stretch, place one arm behind your back and your other arm on top of your head to further increase the tilting motion of your neck. Through physical therapy treatment, an Excel physical therapist can improve your posture, decrease cervical tightness, and decrease those infamous “knots” that seem like they will never go away. We want to provide you with the tools to help reduce and prevent this neck pain from occurring no matter what life throws your way!

While these symptoms are increasingly common, neck pain that arises from stress can be treated and managed with physical therapy. Increased stress levels and prolonged stress are contributing factors to both acute and chronic neck pain. With increased stress, we can experience poor postures, over-activation of larger cervical and scapular musculature, and tightening and weakness of important postural muscles that help keep us in good positions throughout the day. Research has shown that over-activation of upper trapezius muscles occurs in individuals during work activities and in people with neck pain. Your upper trapezius muscles typically need to be re-educated on how to turn off again during lifting, sitting, typing, and other activities that increase postural demands. Once those muscles can relax, the correct postural muscles can be strengthened to better support you, and your neck pain will decrease. At your initial evaluation, a physical therapist will discuss and assess personal and professional factors contributing to your increased stress levels and neck pain. Once specific impairments are found through range of motion, strength, flexibility and endurance testing,

Excel Is Opening Three New Clinic Locations! A Message From CEO Kristin Mullen

Message from the CEO:

With so much negative news surrounding us during the pandemic, this month’s newsletter will take a break from the word COVID and let in a bit of sunshine for your Excel reading experience. We are excited to announce the long awaited opening of three Philadelphia Excel clinics. Excel Passyunk in South Philadelphia opened September 28th, and we anticipate we will be moving into our new locations in Northern Liberties and University City in October. These clinics will be led by directors who have long been treating patients at Excel, and understand the high quality hands-on care that is the hallmark of our company. Your full recovery and individualized patient experience is at the heart of all we do, and we are proud to share our patient experience ratings with you this month. Along with other customer experience focused companies, Excel uses the Net Promoter Score (NPS) to measure its patient experience. The rating is focused on whether patients would recommend Excel to their friends or colleagues as a result of the care they received at an Excel physical therapy clinic. The NPS ranges from a negative 100 to a positive 100 and Excel’s patients gave us a score of a positive 93. To compare, in healthcare, the average score is 62, which is the highest across any industry. A score of 70 or above is considered world class. We know you have choices and we want to be your PT for Life. Thank you for your loyalty to Excel, as we strive to improve ourselves each day, and ensure you are pain-free as a result. All 35 Excel locations are fully open and stand ready to provide our exceptional care. Since March 30, we have safely treated 60,000 in clinic visits and 11,000 telehealth visits.

We welcome your requests, and are happy to further discuss any specific questions you may have, to provide assurance of our commitment to your health and safety. Please feel free to contact us at 866-88-EXCEL or call any of our clinics. We look forward to speaking with you soon and assisting in your care. Lastly, as a service to you, as we know many of you have been homebound and are experiencing pain, we are offering FREE SCREENINGS through the month of October, for all previous patients, friends, and family and hope you continue to remain healthy and safe!

“There are no aides telling you what to do and leaving you to do it. This therapy is very much personal and hands-on BY THE THERAPIST! My therapist was Ross Nachbi, PT, DPT. The reason why I never kept up with PT is because I felt like it was a joke, useless. That is until Excel came highly recommended. I felt so much better from the first visit.” - C.F.
