INSPIRING INDUSTRY CAREER PATHS
Our April/May edition should be out just in time for ELECTEX Belfast, and the team is looking forward to catching up with everyone at the Eikon Exhibition Centre over April 9-10. While you gear up for the show, there’s plenty to keep you occupied inside with the latest news from companies, brands, trade organisations ECA and M&ECA, the Irish Electrical Buying Group and charities IEBA and EIC. Case studies include Haughey Electrical’s installation at the North Coast’s first five-star hotel, Dunluce Lodge, alongside packed features on Fire & Alarm Systems and Tools & Workwear. With a shortage of skilled electricians among the top challenges facing the industry, we offer an inspiring career path Q&A with Harvey Group MD Jonnie Clarke, who started out as an electrical apprentice with the firm in 1997. Equally inspirational is Mercury HR Director Joanne Cluxton, who was appointed in January as the first female president of ECA in Ireland. Enjoy. Keith Hendrick, Director, Ledburn Cables.
FOLLOWING A MANAGEMENT BUYOUT, THE CABLE DISTRIBUTOR PLANS TO DEVELOP ITS REACH WHILE RETAINING A CORE FOCUS ON EXCELLENT SERVICE, TRUSTED SUPPLIERS AND RELIABILITY…
Ledburn Cables welcomes new ownership as it targets growth
What products & services does it provide?
Dublin-based electrical wholesaler Ledburn Cables has new ownership in place after Director Keith Hendrick completed a management buyout of the business in February. Well-established in the Republic of Ireland, the business stocks a full range of data and security, fire, control, house wiring, power, digital TV and satellite multi vision cable. Its 25,000sqft premises is equipped with six cutting machines and lifting equipment handling up to six tonnes. Founded in 2005 by David Blagburn and Jack Ledwidge, the company has built a reputation for best-in-class service and reliability driven by its key relationships with trusted suppliers; core values it will maintain under its new ownership. Starting his career as a graduate management trainee in an electrical wholesaler before moving into commercial roles, Keith joined Ledburn Cables in 2022 as general manager with responsibility of running all aspects of the business. Marking a new chapter aimed at securing the continued development
of the business, the buyout saw Jack Ledwidge retiring from the business while David Blagburn will continue in his role managing purchasing and financial operations. Talking to Ireland’s Electrical Magazine, Keith outlines his plans for development of the business: Tell us about Ledburn Cables Ledburn was established 20 years ago by Dave Blagburn and Jack Ledwidge. It is a customer-focused and electrical wholesale-only business, which it has always maintained through to today. We operate out of a 25,000sqft premises. We have developed strong relationships with a number of key suppliers over the years, which enables us to provide a quality range of products to our customers. What prompted the management buyout of Ledburn Cables? Continuity - we wanted the business to continue and develop as is. Myself, Jack and Dave looked at what’s possible and decided an MBO was the best course of action, both personally and for the business’s development and growth.
We supply a wide range of cables from data to fire and power. Our route to market is wholesale only and we supply the Republic of Ireland and are hoping to
expand to Northern Ireland. What is Ledburn Cable’s USP?
Service and breath of product. We truly believe we offer the best service in the market. Have any new ranges or brands been added to your portfolio? We are working on several new complementary products to our current ranges which we hope to launch by Q3 of this year. We have already added lines such as PV/EV cable. Does the business have any further plans for expansion or investment in 2025? Yes, we hope to expand into Northern Ireland, and we are currently investing in our premises and people so we can offer an even better service and product offering to our customers.

NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK
STARTING OUT AS AN ELECTRICAL APPRENTICE WITH HARVEY GROUP IN 1997, JONNIE CLARKE HAS PROGRESSED TO MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL SPECIALIST… ‘Apprenticeship programmes are key to the future of our industry’
Jonnie Clarke, Managing Director of Harvey Group.
Harvey Group is passionate about supporting apprenticeships as a fantastic way to gain hands-on experience, build vital skills for future careers and foster a culture of learning and development. To mark National Apprenticeship Week in February, Harvey Group Managing Director Jonnie Clarke shared his career pathway since starting out as an electrical apprentice in 1997. He also offered valuable insights into the important role apprenticeships can play in shaping the future of the UK workforce, and what businesses
can do to enhance the apprenticeship experience.
an electrician, and it was always something that interested me.
How long have you been with Harvey Group? I joined the company in 1997 as a first- year electrical apprentice and have been here ever since. Why did you decide to pursue an apprenticeship? At that age, I was unsure of what path to pursue and, after taking advice from my parents, I decided to pursue a trade apprenticeship. My uncle was
How has your apprenticeship shaped your career? When I first started, it was certainly an eye-opener for me. Looking back, I really had no idea what would be involved in the commercial and industrial side of an apprenticeship. From a young age, you would be aware of tradespeople calling to do work at your house on a domestic level. In reality, there are so many strands to both electrical and

“They can help shape you as a person while opening up a variety of career paths.”
How important do you think apprenticeships are for the future of the UK workforce? Apprenticeship programmes are key to the future of our industry. The industry has changed over the years, and the experience that was once there is diminishing. With more young people being drawn to different careers, there is a risk that there won’t be enough tradespeople to carry out the work. This will, in turn, lead to unqualified and inexperienced labour taking on work that they are not capable of delivering. From an MD’s perspective, what can businesses do to improve the apprenticeship experience for young people entering the workforce? We have to do all we can to support our young people through their apprenticeships. Most apprentices are fresh out of school with no experience
plumbing works, and a huge variety of sectors to work in.
whatsoever. It is an unfortunate reality that not all apprenticeships will be successful. Some will not complete their training and decide to take a different career path entirely. We are open and honest about the highs and lows of entering the construction industry when interviewing candidates. It’s important to remember that the construction trade is not for everyone. Early starts and cold winter mornings are a shock to young people fresh out of school. However, the benefits of an apprenticeship, and how they can help shape you as a person while opening up a variety of career paths, make it a rewarding choice. 14 Glenwell Road, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, BT36 7RF T: +44 (0)28 9034 2444 E: enquiries@harveygroup.co.uk www.harveygroup.co.uk
What skills or experiences from your apprenticeship have you found to be most valuable? I’ve had so many good people around me while serving my time as an apprentice; good old-school foremen and journeymen who had been through it all and were happy to share their experience and offer their advice if you were willing to listen. As an apprentice, you need to show an interest and ask plenty of questions. How does the apprenticeship programme you completed compare to the programmes offered today? It has changed, but I believe the basics of the apprenticeship are the same. You learn the fundamentals in training college and gain invaluable practical experience with experienced tradespeople while on site. What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship? Go for it! It opens up so many other opportunities further down the line. After completing your electrical or plumbing apprenticeship, you can choose from a wide variety of careers from electrician, plumber, contracts manager, design engineer, estimator to quantity surveyor, or even go your own way and start a business of your own. There is also the technical apprenticeship route. While studying for your university degree, you get invaluable site and office-based experiences, working with different departments within the company. As with any young person setting out in their career journey, having the right attitude is imperative. Have a good work ethic, a can-do attitude, and a willingness to learn, and you’ll be in a good place.
