Looking to the future

At Hogan Lovells, we don’t just claim to be innovative. We show it. We embrace change. We make it happen. Being global game-changers means many things, all of which reÀect who we are and the work that we do. It’s about using our legal and commercial skills to solve the most complex issues across the world. It’s about thinking creatively, bringing ideas to our clients and responding to their needs. It’s about being a place where diverse people thrive and succeed. A place where we all have a positive impact on the world around us. But these are challenging times. As I write this, we’re dealing with the global crisis caused by COVID-19. Across many of our ȯces, we’re working from home and ¿nding new ways to be agile, Àexible and to remain connected with our clients and each other. Looking ahead, we’ll take all these learnings to reimagine how we work as a bold and distinctive law ¿rm. In fact, the future is always on our minds. We may be seen as leaders in innovation – both in our legal thinking and the way we deliver legal services – but we don’t rest on our laurels. Far from it. If you join us, you’ll be part of a team that relishes new challenges and areas of law, like our recent work on drones, cyber security, blockchain and FinTech. You’ll pursue big ideas and do brilliant things, encouraged by everyone around you. So your development will never stop at Hogan Lovells, no matter how high you climb. Susan Bright Ȯce Managing Partner and Global Managing Partner for Diversity & Inclusion and Responsible Business If there’s one person who truly knows the ins and outs of Hogan Lovells, it’s Susan Bright. Having trained here in 1989, she qualied into our competition practice and, today, is Oce Managing Partner and Global Managing Partner for Diversity & Inclusion and Responsible Business.

Our outlook on the world Good citizenship at Hogan Lovells is not about ticking a certain box. It’s an integral part of who we are. It’s something that brings us together and encourages everyone to do better. Most of all, it’s a commitment that will never falter.

Partnerships that bring peace Our global citizenship partner is PeaceTech Lab : a non- pro¿t organisation that works in conÀict zones around the world to promote peace through technology, media and data. They tackle corruption, racial injustice, misogyny and violent extremism in some of the most dangerous places on earth, and we’re incredibly proud to support them. Right now, we’re working together on a global hate speech pro bono project, putting together a report that analyses what is considered hate speech and which laws cover it. We’ll then collaborate with PeaceTech Lab to see how these ¿ndings can be used in their work going forward. Whether it’s pro bono legal advice, fundraising or skills- based volunteering, our partnership means everyone at Hogan Lovells – regardless of background, position or location – can serve as peacebuilders in a time of signi¿cant unrest. That’s not just game-changing work, it’s life-changing.

Putting the social in enterprise As part of your induction, we’ll introduce you to HL BaSE , our thriving social enterprise legal practice. HL BaSE delivers training to junior lawyers on business and social impact issues, and works together with corporate clients to provide legal advice to social enterprises. Through it, you’ll learn about the fundamentals of business and what drives clients’ big decisions. You’ll learn how to be more entrepreneurial so you can win more work, and you’ll discover how important the way we conduct ourselves is to the ¿rm’s success. Even before you join us, you can discover more about our world through the HL BaSE Legal Learning Hub : a virtual programme full of insightful presentations and workshops. You’ll develop your commercial awareness and client care skills, explore our practice groups and training contracts, and learn about diversity and wellbeing at the ¿rm. Interested? A personal journey to associate

What’s it like to nd your personal path from trainee to associate? Here’s Stelios Charitopoulos, talking about his training contract and nding his calling in competition law.

My secondment meant that I spent my third and fourth seats with the Competition teams in London and Brussels immediately before qualifying. As a result, I was progressively doing associate-level work even as a trainee. So when I made the leap to associate in the Antitrust, Competition and Economic Regulation team, it was a very smooth transition. That said, you do assume a lot more responsibility – which can feel daunting at ¿rst. However, senior members of the team were always on hand to provide support and there were plenty of bespoke training sessions that helped me along the way. Thanks to the ¿rm’s global presence and the strength of our practice group, I get to work with high-pro¿le, multinational clients across a wide range of industries. At the same time, I advise on some of the best and most complex matters in the market. It’s incredibly satisfying, not to mention professionally ful¿lling, to be a part of projects that make headlines and set legal precedent. Stelios Charitopolous Associate in the Antitrust, Competition and Economic Regulation team

I chose Hogan Lovells for a number of reasons, but at the top of my list were things like the ¿rm’s reputation, culture and well-rounded training contracts. More importantly, during my vacation scheme here, I was welcomed as a member of the team in all of the departments that I joined. I saw ¿rst-hand that the opinions of trainees are genuinely valued; and that there’s a lot of support for trainees to challenge themselves, take on early responsibility and develop as lawyers and individuals. I really enjoyed each and every one of the seats on my training contract, which included working with the International Arbitration and Debt Capital Markets teams. But as I’d suspected during my university studies, I ended up enjoying competition law the most. With a mix of UK and EU law and a focus on economic theory, it’s an incredibly dynamic area of law that’s constantly evolving to keep up with changes in the markets. Another highlight was my ¿nal seat on secondment in Brussels. I got to experience competition law from a dĭerent perspective and grow my personal network – both within the ¿rm and in my ¿eld more generally. Considering the close collaboration between the London and Brussels competition teams, this has been invaluable to me as an associate. Overall, it was an incredible opportunity to be at the centre of European competition law, surrounded by EU institutions.

“There’s a lot of support for trainees to challenge themselves, take on early responsibility and develop as lawyers and individuals.”

Vacation schemes are also your chance to meet as many dĭerent people at the ¿rm as you can. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to chat informally to partners, associates, trainees and fellow students through things like team meetings, your trainee buddy network, lunch and learn sessions, and social events. So get involved, make new friends and connections – they could well be your colleagues in a few years’ time.

“Throw yourself in at the deep end” was a popular suggestion. Trainees thought taking on tasks “even if they terrify you” was the best way to show what you’re made of and how fast you can pick things up. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they might be silly” was also up there. Everyone appreciates you’re there to learn, and asking lots of questions shows you’re curious and engaged.

“Choosing my seats was about nding a team that I felt could support me to do well and really grow as a lawyer..” Taylor Harris, Associate

Choosing your seats Here’s how it works: you’ll do four six-month seats across our broad range of practice groups. Two seats will be in our corporate and ¿nance group, and another in one of our litigation teams, as these are where we have most of our quali¿cation vacancies. For your third or fourth seat, you’ll also have the chance to do an international or client secondment. We do things collaboratively here, so we’ll ask you where you’d like to work and then create a seat plan that takes your preferences into account, alongside the needs of our business. Whichever path you take, you’ll discover the ins and outs of our fascinating world – and your place within it.

Developing your commercial focus

Jennifer O’Connell’s career has taken her in all sorts of dierent directions. One of her biggest learnings? That commercial awareness is a vital part of being a successful lawyer.

tough decision, but I left Hogan Lovells and joined a French investment bank. It gave me a dĭerent perspective: we often see a client as one entity, but they’re made up of dĭerent business lines and functions – often competing with each other. Being sensitive to this is an important part of delivering the right legal service for that client. I returned to Hogan Lovells after seven years in-house, able to better relate to my clients’ needs. So my advice for aspiring lawyers? Try to put yourself in the client’s shoes. Rather than focusing on what you can give, consider what you’d want to receive if you were the client. It’s all part of developing your commercial focus, and helping you become a successful lawyer.

To me, commercial awareness is about giving clients advice that goes beyond the textbook answer. It means considering who the client is, their ambitions, what’s most important to them, and what their budget is. Sometimes they just want a quick, top- level answer; other times something deeper is required – a fully reasoned analysis. It all depends on context, so commercial awareness is being able to see the bigger picture and identifying exactly what’s needed. I ¿rst joined Hogan Lovells as a trainee, and my background was dĭerent to most. I’d worked with the World Economic Forum focusing on the Davos Conference, immersed in a world of business and management. By the time I completed a law conversion course and became a trainee, I was 10 years older than my peers. But my background was embraced and seen as an asset to the ¿rm; it felt like home from my very ¿rst visit. After becoming a senior associate, I was eager to get some experience on the client side of capital markets. It was a

Your application

A quick, enquiring mind is a given. We look for a strong academic record that features excellent results from GCSE (or equivalent) onwards, and includes a good 2:1 or above (or equivalent). However, we use a Contextual Recruitment System (CRS) as we realise that life impacts students’ performance in dĭerent ways. Commercial nous is vital too. You’ll need to get to grips not only with the world of law, but with the business worlds that our clients operate in. Then there’s the ability to think around corners and see beyond the obvious. Team spirit is another essential. We’ll want you to pitch in, collaborate with colleagues from dĭerent practice groups, industry sectors and countries, and help us deliver seamlessly for clients across borders. Since globalisation is a fact of life, and we’re one of the world’s largest global legal practices, we also look for an international outlook. You’ll be someone who adapts naturally to new surroundings, responds to cultural nuances and tackles the unpredictable with con¿dence. Last, but not least, you’ll be resilient. Rigorous attention to detail won’t faze you, nor will the pressure of complex work, deadlines or putting in the extra hours to deliver the most professional job possible. What does it take to work at Hogan Lovells? What’s involved in the application process? How can you make your application stand out from the crowd? These are the questions we’ll cover o in this section – starting with the kind of qualities and skills we look for.
