popular vote (just under 50%), and will be inaugurated as the nation’s 47th president on January 20, 2025. HOW DID IT HAPPEN? Seventy-two percent of voters in CNN exit polls conducted on Election Day said that they were “disappointed” or “angry” “about the way things are going in U.S.” Sixty-eight percent said the nation’s economy was “not so good” or “poor.” Seventy-five percent said that inflation has caused their family “severe” or “moderate” hardship. In addition, Trump’s support from Latino voters was up 14% over his 2020 race against Joe Biden. Forty-six percent of self-identified Hispanic voters voted for Trump. In four years, Trump has increased by 7% his support among voters aged 18 to 29. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris failed to outperform President Joe Biden’s totals in 2020 in any state. Harris won 53% of the women’s vote, while Trump won 55% of the votes cast by men. Harris did not register a single win among the seven so-called “battleground” states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
• Former President Donald Trump wins Georgia and nationally. • Partisan representation in the U.S. Congress from Georgia will not change; the GOP controls nine of the state’s 14 congressional seats. • Republicans will control the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House in the next session of Congress, giving Republicans control of Congress and the presidency . • Democrats picked up no new seats in the Georgia state Senate and just one in the Georgia House of Representatives. Two Republican incumbents lost their re-election bids Tuesday, Ken Vance, Milledgeville, and Mesha Mainor, of Atlanta. Democratic incumbent state Rep. Farooq Mughal also lost. • All ballot questions were approved by voters. • SB 202 , the so-called Republican “election reform” bill from 2021, has virtually killed absentee voting by mail. About 5.3 million Georgians voted in the November 2024 election. However, just 266,000
voted by absentee by mail, raising questions as to whether the infirmed, elderly voters, and other who cannot physically get to a polling location have been disenfranchised.
