Hello to students and families,

Community Noticeboard

As we approach the end of the school year, I ’ d like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible experiences our students have had and the growth we ’ ve witnessed throughout the College. This year has been one of great achievement and progress, exemplified not only by academic success but also by the demonstration of our College values of Learning, Leadership, Teamwork, and Respect. Our Year 3 and 4 students had an unforgettable experience at The Ranch on the Mornington Peninsula. The camp provided an excellent opportunity for students to engage in hands - on learning and outdoor activities, all while building essential skills such as problem - solving, resilience, and collaboration. This camp was a wonderful example of how we use experiential learning to support our College value of Teamwork as students worked together, faced challenges, and celebrated their successes as a group. It was inspiring to see students grow in confidence, develop leadership qualities, and demonstrate respect for themselves, each other, and the environment. Equally memorable was our Colour Fun Run, which saw our entire College community come together in the spirit of fun and giving. This event not only brought joy and laughter but also provided a platform for our students to demonstrate Leadership and Respect as they supported each other, cheered on their peers, and celebrated the importance of community involvement. The funds raised from the Colour Fun Run will go towards supporting outdoor furniture for our students. A significant milestone was reached by our Year 11 students, who recently completed their Year 12 2025 Step - Up Program. The program provided a range of learning opportunities that prepared them for the academic and personal challenges ahead. As they marked their final day of the program, students demonstrated Leadership by stepping up to the expectations set before them, and showed Teamwork by supporting one another through this crucial transition. Their hard work and determination are a reflection of our College ’ s dedication to fostering lifelong Learners who lead with integrity.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT

Our College stands on the Country of the Wurundjeri - willam people of the Kulin Nations. This Country always was, and always will be, a place of learning and connection. To set our intentions for caring for Country, people and places within our College community for the 2025 school year, we are honoured to invite you to a special event.

On February 3rd , we will gather at our Primary Campus for a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony .

The event will begin with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Zeta Thomson , a respected Elder and descendant of the Yarra Yarra Clan of the Wurundjeri people, and the Ulupna and Moira Clans of the Yorta Yorta people. Aunty Zeta's words will guide us as we acknowledge and respect the Traditional Custodians of Country. Following this, Simone and Nicole Thomson , proud Woi - Wurrung Wurundjeri and Yorta - Yorta women, will conduct the Smoking Ceremony . Simone, an artist whose works are featured across both our Primary and Secondary campuses, will guide us through this sacred ceremony, which is a vital part of the cultural tradition to cleanse and protect the space, and set intentions for the year ahead.

Event Details: Date: February 3rd, 2025 Location: Primary Campus Time: 9:30am

We warmly welcome all members of the College community to join us in this meaningful and respectful ceremony to start the year with cultural understanding, connection, and unity.

We look forward to sharing this important occasion with you.

Our Year 10 students concluded their year with a memorable sleepover to mark the end of their final day in Year 10. This experience was not only a fun way to build camaraderie among peers but also a key part of their transition into Year 11. As they embark on their Step - Up Program, they embrace the challenge of becoming the future leaders of our school. Through this experience, they demonstrate Learning by stepping out of their comfort zones and developing important study skills and strategies, and show Respect as they learn to balance the demands of academic life with their personal growth. Another exciting moment for the College was the College Captain and Vice Captain interviews, held across both our Primary and Secondary Campuses. This process highlighted the importance of Leadership and Teamwork as students showcased their vision for the school and their commitment to representing their peers. The interviews also reflect our commitment to fostering responsible, capable leaders who are ready to serve and guide our school community with respect and care. As this is the last formal newsletter of the year, it ’ s an opportune time to celebrate the growth we ’ ve seen throughout the year. This year has been defined by our shared commitment to Learning , Leadership , Teamwork , and Respect . Our students have excelled in their learning journeys, and our staff have demonstrated continued professional development to ensure we are providing the best possible opportunities for all. Our facilities have been

upgraded to create an environment that supports innovation and engagement, and our School Council has worked tirelessly to strengthen community connections, further enhancing the support network for both students and families. While we have accomplished so much this year, there is still much to look forward to. Events such as: Under the Stars; Year 9’ s Amazing Race in Melbourne, Naarm; Team Dream performances; the Year 6 Graduation; Year 7 Orientation Day and Transition Week; Funfields excursions; Meet the Teachers; and our Awards Night are all on the horizon. These events provide additional opportunities for our students to demonstrate the values we hold dear, as they celebrate achievements and forge deeper connections within the College community. Looking ahead, we will conclude the year by celebrating our students ’ hard work and achievements in the final edition of our newsletter, which will feature all award winners and proudly announce our 2025 College Captains. Thank you to everyone in our community for contributing to an outstanding year. Together, we have created an environment where students are encouraged to grow, lead, collaborate, and respect one another. We look forward to finishing the year strong and celebrating all that we have achieved together.

TERM 4 STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND AGENCY REPORT

As we approach the end of the year, it is important to reflect on the progress we ’ ve made in fostering student engagement and agency across both our Primary and Secondary campuses. This Term has seen continued success in initiatives that promote student choice, collaboration, and a strong sense of community.

accurate records and continued support for our students. We thank all families in advance for their ongoing partnership in this effort. We are proud of the way our school community comes together to support each other, and this is another shining example of the strength of our collaborative approach.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR MODELS

Our positive behaviour models across the College continue to evolve to better meet the needs of our students and their families. These models are under constant review to ensure they remain relevant and effective. We are committed to ensuring that our students feel supported, respected, and encouraged to contribute positively to our school community. As we move into 2025, we look forward to continuing the development of these programs and refining our approach to ensure the ongoing success of our students. THE RESILIENCE PROJECT: A NEW INITIATIVE FOR 2025 In 2025, we are excited to be incorporating the Resilience Project into our Primary Campus ’ student engagement and well - being offerings. This program will bring valuable tools and strategies for building resilience, emotional intelligence, and well - being to our students. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Resilience Project team and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our students and the broader school community.

PRIMARY CAMPUS: LEARNER AGENCY HOUR

The Learner Agency Hour on the Primary Campus continues to be a highlight of our student engagement initiatives. This program, which promotes student choice, collaboration, and ownership of learning, has been a resounding success in Term 4. Students are empowered to take an active role in their learning, working together to explore topics of interest while developing essential skills in critical thinking, problem - solving, and self - direction. The sense of community that has developed through this program is evident as students work across grade levels, fostering positive relationships and a collaborative spirit that extends beyond the classroom.

SECONDARY CAMPUS: LEARNER COACH SESSIONS

At our Secondary Campus, the Monday morning Learner Coach sessions remain a central part of the weekly routine. These sessions, with their vertical structure, offer a unique opportunity for students to connect with peers across year levels, while the consistency of the routine provides a sense of security and belonging. The caring approach from staff continues to set a positive tone for the week ahead, ensuring that students start each week with a clear sense of purpose and direction. The focus on building strong relationships and fostering a supportive community remains a key aspect of this initiative, and we continue to see the benefits in student engagement and well - being.

LOOKING AHEAD

As we wrap up Term 4, we reflect with pride on the progress we ’ ve made in building a strong, inclusive, and engaging learning environment. Our programs continue to evolve, always with the goal of empowering students, fostering community, and supporting well - being. The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

The 2024 Colour Run was an unforgettable event, filled with excitement, laughter, and a lot of messy fun! As Primary SRC students, we had the opportunity to participate in this special event and raise funds for The Lakes while having an amazing time. One of the funniest and most exciting moments was watching Ms Lee, Mr Abney - Hastings, Mr Taylor and Ms Price get slimed with all different coloured slimes! It was both hilarious and gross as they were drenched in neon green, pink, yellow, and blue slime – but everyone couldn ’ t stop laughing. The sliming was a highlight of the day, especially seeing Ms Price trying to eat her sausage in bread whilst getting slimed and seeing Mr Abney - Hastings scream when he got slimed. Not only did we have an awesome time getting messy, but we also managed to raise a huge amount of money for The Lakes – $10,500! It felt amazing knowing that we were able to contribute to our school while having such a blast. The funds raised will go towards improving our school, which is something we can all be proud of, as part of our Lakes values of school pride. We couldn ’ t have done it without the support of the Year 10 students, Lexi R and Ben M, who helped the younger students during the event.

They made sure everyone was safe, encouraged us to keep going, and made the day even more enjoyable. It was great to have such positive role models helping out. The sausage sizzle was another great part of the day, and it was fantastic to raise over $100 from it. Thanks to Mr Collins and Mr Sarlos for running the BBQ. Mr Zebrowski and Ms Solaja did a great job at taking photos of all the students getting coloured and slimed! Look out for our photos on our Lakes social media websites. To top it all off, Monty the Monster came to visit, adding a fun surprise element to the event. The highlight of Monty ’ s visit was the foam bubble machine, which was a huge hit with all of us. The bubbles created a magical atmosphere, and it felt like we were running through a cloud of foam while we were covered in colorful slime. Overall, the 2024 Colour Run was an exciting and unforgettable experience, and it was so much fun to be a part of an event that brought the whole school together for a great cause. We can ’ t wait to do it all again next year!

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter TEACHING & LEARNING

WHAT IS ATAR

& HOW IS IT CALCULATED?

One of VCE ’ s big mysteries is how the magical ATAR is calculated. Here ’ s a brief overview of what is done.

AGGREGATE SCORE BEFORE ATAR

The word “ aggregate ” means something that is formed by several parts. For example, a cake is an aggregate because it is made from flour, milk, sugar etc. The Aggregate Score is calculated by adding the Scaled Study Scores of English, the next three highest Scaled Study Scores and 10% of a fifth and sixth Study Score where applicable.

WHAT IS THE ATAR?

Mathematical Methods

Business Management

English

Psychology

Physics

Philosophy

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number that ranks students according to their academic performance in VCE. It is used by universities in their selection process.

Scaled Study Score

32

43

41

39

37

25

It is a number up to 99.95 with increments of 0.05 that represents a student ’ s rank within Victoria.

Aggregate Score

= English + Top 3 Subjects + 10% of 5 th and 6 th subjects

For example, if you score 99.95, this is akin to being in the top 0.05% of Victoria. Likewise, an ATAR score of 80.00 is indicative of being in the top 20%.

=

32 + 43 + 41 + 39 + 3.7 + 2.5

= 161.2

FINALLY, ATAR IS CALCULATED FROM THE AGGREGATE SCORE

THEN WHAT ’ S A STUDY SCORE?

The Study Score is a value out of 50 which ranks a student's performance for a particular VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) subject. Completed Year 12 subjects are each given a Study Score which are then used to calculate the ATAR.

The ATAR score comes directly from the aggregate score. All students aggregate scores are placed on a scale from lowest to highest and this is used to determine the percentiles. With each year ’ s results VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) provides a table which shows the relationship between the two numbers. An example of such a table from a few years ago can be seen below.

SCALED STUDY SCORE

The word “ scale ” means to adjust a number by a certain amount or proportion. For example, if you scale up someone ’ s wage, you are increasing the amount that the person receives. You may have heard of certain subjects being “ scaled. ” This is when a number is either added to or deducted from a Study Score. It is used to make all VCE subjects comparable in terms of the study score, regardless of some subjects being more difficult than others. Scaling was introduced so that there is a level playing field and students can pick subjects they are interested in without worrying about how it will affect their ATAR.

ATAR

Aggregate Score

99.90

208.98

95.00

173.89

91.00

162.57

90.00

160.27

80.00

142.29

In that particular year an Aggregate Score of 161.2 would be the equivalent to an ATAR of approximately 90.50.
