A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

This week we welcomed back the students who had been away on the recent residential trips to Boppard and Fontainebleau. Year 10 German students had a fantastic time soaking up the language and culture of the Rheinland last week. Boat trips on the Rhein, climbing to the top of the Kölner Dom, chairlifts across the vineyards of Boppard and whizzing around the rollercoasters of Phantasialand. This all coupled with a great hotel with so much food to eat, evening walks along the Rhein to buy an ice cream (in German, of course) and an impromptu piano performance after dinner, made for amazing memories for both the staff and students. Mrs Robinson said she could not be prouder of the students’ behaviour and their ability to embrace the German adventure. Roll on Boppard & Köln 2024! Last weekend, 10 members of the Waldegrave School Orchestra travelled via Eurostar to Paris and then onto Fontainebleau to join other students from Portugal, France, Italy, Romania, and Germany to form a scratch orchestra. All the towns involved are twinned together and we represented Richmond with an amazing display of resilience, musicianship and collaboration as we tackled some very tricky pieces. Nabucco, Danse Macabre, and the Habanera are just a few of the pieces we performed to a full theatre and standing ovation in Fontainebleau. We even found time for a trip to the Eiffel tower, a stroll around the beautiful Fontainebleau palace gardens and plenty of ice cream and patisseries to keep the sugar levels up during a long 2 days of playing. Congratulations to all involved and a massive thank you to the generosity of the host families who housed the students during their stay. Click here to see some photos from this trip. We also had the privilege of welcoming Laura Trott MBE, Minister of Pensions, into Waldegrave on Thursday. During her visit she spoke to students from Years 10 and 12 about the importance of pensions and her plans for reform, what it is like to be an MP and how getting into politics is a fantastic way to make a difference. The students were really engaged and asked some very insightful questions - we hope they use this experience to their advantage when we do our own mock Elections next year! Well done to Ege K in 10SAS for achieving a High Merit in her LCM Grade 4 exam! Congratulations to our Year 9/10 Cricket team who participated in the U15 Chance To Compete London Cricket tournament at Barn Elms Sports Field. The team played fantastically in all their matches, finishing in first place! The first two weeks back from half term will be assessment weeks for our Year 10 students. I would like to wish them all good luck as they prepare for these exams over the half term and hope they can also find time to relax and enjoy the break.
