Calendar should be bilingual
The Editor, As a former four-time mayor of Gren- ville-sur-la-Rouge, I owe a great deal of respect to the French-Canadian members of our community who have voted for me, showed great patience in my attempt to communicate in French during our bilin- gual meetings. Heaven knows my French is not perfect but they knew I was sincere and was doing my best. Our status is of a bilingual community because of the large percentage of English-speaking citizens. Communicating in both languages shows respect for the taxpayer. This now brings me to the subject of my writing this letter. I received my 2013 calen- dar for Grenville-sur-la-Rouge. It is without a doubt a beautiful piece of work. It can be criticized for a few weaknesses that could have been foreseen but I will refrain from doing so and concentrate on my main ob- jections. This calendar is comparable to those pro- duced by some of the more affluent munic- ipalities in Québec. Has Grenville-sur-la-Rouge suddenly be- come prosperous? It would appear so. I do realize that by soliciting our local business- es they have made this project reasonable. My serious concern is the following: All communication with our citizens was pre- viously in both languages. I was astounded to find Dianne Monette, our “mairesse sup- pléante”, addressing our citizens in French only. For those of us who cannot read and un- derstand French we obviously are not even
considered worthy of English communica- tions. A most sincere apology for this po- litically incorrect position is required should you expect any support from all your citi- zens be they English or French. The opinion expressed here is mine alone. Gary Cowan Grenville-sur-la-Rouge “Fumble for fame” richard.mahoney@eap.on.ca Hawkesbury councillors Johanne Portelance and Michel Thibodeau might be tempted to say, “We told you so.” January, 30, 2012, they were on the losing side of a 5-2 Hawkesbury town council vote that saw the municipality agree to pay $24,800 for infomercials promoting the town. The decision was rescinded the next day when officials concluded doubts about the pitch were justified. Lo and behold, under a heading “Fumble for fame,” the magazine Maclean’s listed the promos as number 26 on its list of “99 Stupid Things The Government Did With Your Money Last Year.” Maclean’s reports: “Four small cities, including Guelph and Langley, B.C., forked over a total of roughly $100,000 to have former football great Terry Bradshaw appear in short promos about them that were meant to attract new American businesses to small-town Canada. The videos found airtime mostly off hours, while the famous QB, who narrates the promos, couldn’t sound more bored.” UPDATE
