A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

During this last week before half term we have had plenty of events take place. We welcomed Professor Chevallier from Royal Holloway, who enlightened our students about the captivating interdisciplinary nature of economics and its immense importance. We hope this has inspired the students into considering studying Economics in the future. We also had an assembly led by Mr Isted, introducing Mrs Dhir who will be taking over from Mr Goulbourne as Head of Key Stage after half term when we start the transition into KS4. Last weekend, 10 members of the Waldegrave School Orchestra travelled via Eurostar to Paris and then onto Fontainebleau to join other students from Portugal, France, Italy, Romania, and Germany to form a scratch orchestra. All the towns involved are twinned together and we represented Richmond with an amazing display of resilience, musicianship and collaboration as we tackled some very tricky pieces. Nabucco, Danse Macabre, and the Habanera are just a few of the pieces we performed to a full theatre and standing ovation in Fontainebleau. We even found time for a trip to the Eiffel tower, a stroll around the beautiful Fontainebleau palace gardens and plenty of ice cream and patisseries to keep the sugar levels up during a long 2 days of playing. Congratulations to all involved and a massive thank you to the generosity of the host families who housed the students during their stay. Click here to see some photos from this trip. Congratulations to our Year 9/10 Cricket team who participated in the U15 Chance To Compete London Cricket tournament at Barn Elms Sports Field. The team played fantastically in all their matches, finishing in first place! Well done to Clemence P for achieving a Gold certificate and the highest score in the school in the Intermediate Maths challenge. Her exceptionally high score meant that she qualified for the Cayley Olympiad in which she went on to achieve a Silver medal! Massive congratulations to Emily C in 9EAH who has been offered a role as one of the children in Opera Holland Park’s production of La Boheme this summer. Congratulations also to Nahla G in 9FJA who came first at the NDP Acrobatic Finals competing as a Grade 4 Women’s Group. This year they have won three other gold medals at Tigers International Acro Cup, King Edmund Grades Competition and the Mike Walker Invitational Comp. Incredible achievement! A big well done to all the students participating in the DofE training last week. The trainers were all impressed by our students’ concentration and ability to take on new things. The students worked on route planning, navigation and camping crafts. Expeditions will start after half term. We are very much looking forward to the last term of Year 9. There are plenty of trips planned with a variety of subjects from the Strawberry House English trip to watching professional drama performances to our fun day out in July for Drop Down Day. There is plenty to look forward to. Please can I remind parents and carers that as we move into the final term our expectations remain the same. Students should continue to abide by the uniform policy, this means keeping skirts at the appropriate length, and we should not be able to see or hear mobile phones. Thank you for your support.
