A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
Year 12 students were involved in a number of activities once again this week. Ten members of the Waldegrave School Orchestra travelled via Eurostar to Paris and then onto Fontainebleau to join other students from Portugal, France, Italy, Romania, and Germany to form a scratch orchestra. All the towns involved are twinned together and we represented Richmond with an amazing display of resilience, musicianship and collaboration as we tackled some very tricky pieces. Nabucco, Danse Macabre, and the Habanera are just a few of the pieces they performed to a full theatre and standing ovation in Fontainebleau. They even found time for a trip to the Eiffel tower, a stroll around the beautiful Fontainebleau palace gardens and plenty of ice cream and patisseries to keep the sugar levels up during a long 2 days of playing. Over the course of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the Year 12 textiles students completed their mock exams. The dresses they produced were wonderful and a testament to their and their teachers’ hard work. On Tuesday, we had the privilege of hosting Professor Chevallier from Royal Holloway, who enlightened our students about the interdisciplinary nature of economics and its immense importance to all our lives. Our students were captivated, engaging with Professor Chevalier, asking thought-provoking questions, and reflecting on the implications of economic thinking. We’re grateful for his expertise and hope he inspired the students. Furthermore, on Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome Professor Blagrove, who discussed the psychology and neuroscience of dreaming, including Theories and Experimental Evidence in the Psychology of Dreaming. Professor Blagrove delved into the intriguing realm of sleep and dreams and also shed light on the modules that will be available to students after they complete the sixth form. On Thursday, we had the privilege of welcoming Laura Trott MBE, Minister of Pensions, into Waldegrave. During her visit she spoke to students from Years 10 and 12 about the importance of pensions and her plans for reform, what it is like to be an MP and how getting into politics is a fantastic way to make a difference. The students were really engaged and asked some very insightful questions - we hope they use this experience to their advantage when we do our own mock Elections next year! Additionally, on Thursday, the Year 12 Drama Students took part in the Component 1 Exam. Their performance was really fascinating. Art students spent the day off-timetable to prepare for their upcoming Art mock exam. During the first week after half term, students will be involved in a number of events. Art students will complete their Art exam - I’d like to wish them all the best of luck, I look forward to seeing their final pieces. We also will be welcoming Dr Daniels into school to talk to our Economics students as well as holding a German Career Roadshow trip. The week will conclude with a trip that involves all Year 12 Politics students to the Parliament. On a final note, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all students a restful break. I look forward to welcoming them all back to school on Monday 5 June.
