A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

It has been another busy week for Year 12 students as we approach the end of term, with many events and opportunities organised in and out of the classroom. Last Thursday, Year 12 English Literature students visited Keats House in Hampstead. Studying Keats’ poetry for their Romantic poetry examination, this visit allowed them to deepen their appreciation of the poet’s life and work through a tour and a workshop on one of his set poems. A group of Year 12 students have been acting as buddies to our visiting Taiwanese students this week, diligently escorting them to lessons and interacting with them during break times, sharing their experience of school life in Britain. Mr. Allen led a group of chemists to enter a global health competition run by Imperial College London. Their submission, a poster on the potential of rapid TB testing for displaced people, was designed and researched by Sabaa Q, Anvi O, Keira W, Gracie D, Lara R, and Leila S. The physicists also presented their research projects in a viva style, answering questions on topics as diverse as the moon and guitar pickups. Year 12 Art students had the pleasure of visiting the Hayward Gallery and Tate Britain this week to find inspiration for their Year 13 coursework. The Taylor Strachan exhibition was particularly inspiring and celebrated unsung explorers and pioneers, whose stories have often been overlooked due to cultural bias. Our Year 12s attended the World of Work workshop hosted by the Worshipful Company of World Traders. This insightful event provided exposure to essential soft skills, including effective interview techniques and an overview of various career paths, greatly enhancing their readiness for the professional world. History students enriched their study of the A Level Tudor rebellions unit with a visit to the National Archives at Kew. They participated in a workshop on the extent to which rebellion threatened the country from 1536-1569 and handled original Tudor documents as part of their investigation. During Drop Down Day, Year 12s enjoyed an inter-form sports day featuring a mix of serious and fun events. Students participated enthusiastically, reinforcing positive relationships with each other and staff. You will have received your child’s progress report this week. Please discuss their progress with them and contact the school if you have any questions or concerns. Note that UCAS predictions are not included in the report as they are based on multiple data sources. If your child plans to attend a university open day, please notify us as far in advance as possible. Last-minute notifications disrupt teacher planning and register updates. Thank you for your consideration and support.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley

This debut novel is a funny, clever book with such an engaging narrative voice. The premise is fantastical: the UK government develops the ability to travel back in time and ‘rescue’ people from history who were about to die in their times, bringing them back to the present as time ‘expats’. Cue plenty of comedy as the expats discover things like Spotify and modern plumbing. But it also has a serious message about power: who has power over history and the stories we tell about the past?
