Medical Innovation, Research and Entrepreneurship
ULP’s Medical Innovation Research and Entrepreneurship (MIRE) program in partnership with Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), North Orange County Regional Occupational Program (NOCROP), College and Career Advantage (CCA), and Coastline Regional Occupational Program, aligns pediatric medical professionals with high school students across Orange County. During the 11-week program, students work in groups to research and collaborate, focusing on creating an innovation that addresses a real health issue facing children in Orange County. Students learn and interact with a variety of industry professionals to understand the current unmet pediatric clinical needs and choose one that they research and propose a solution for. The groups are trained and coached on visual and oral presentation skills and after practice and feedback, record a pitch that details their innovations for the industry mentors and judges from CHOC and ULP. Winners are announced at the MIRE celebration for students, parents, educators, and partners. Not only do students learn invaluable skills, build networks, and explore careers, they also earn 2.5 transferable college credits.
