Born to Paddle A Lifelong Splash Through Lake Living

Growing up in the “Great Lakes State,” I thought that meant all five of the Great Lakes belonged to Michigan. We don’t even touch Lake Ontario, and another one is way off to the side, but it’s still ours!? Wow, that’s amazing, I thought as a kid. Now, anyone who knows the region’s geography knows that’s not the case. We share these incredible lakes with seven other states, even though we still get bragging rights being the only state to border four out of five. Anyone lucky enough to live in the Great Lakes states probably knows the feeling of calm that comes from being out on the water. Maybe I’m a bit biased because I’ve loved the water since I was little, but you can bet everyone around here has an aunt, cousin, friend, or a friend of a friend with a cabin on the lake that was home to fun memories. Celebrate Your Lakes Day is on Aug. 9, and I’ve been enjoying the lakes here my whole life. Whether it’s on a stand-up paddleboard or a giant boat, when I’m on the water, I feel different — at peace. I have been exposed to lakes since before I was even one year old, and I still love to spend time on the serene waters. My grandma’s sister lived on Otsego Lake in the Gaylord area, so from the time I was born, we started going to the lake and spending time on boats. When I was about 8, I learned to sail on my great aunt’s sailfish, and we’d zip back and forth across the lake on it. I even once joined my cousin’s family on a sailing trip to the Virgin Islands. In high school, my parents moved to Lake Orion in a northern suburb of Detroit. The funny thing is that I spend less time on the lake when I live closer to one, compared to summer vacations, when it was a trek. We’d make sure to hit the lake for all the big summer holidays like Memorial Day, enjoying every activity you can think of on the water.

To this day, we always watch the Fourth of July fireworks from a boat. About 80% of my fireworks experiences have been on the water. The few times I have seen them from the ground were surreal. It’s a Michigan thing. No matter what town you’re in, the lakes will be filled with boats in the dark with their green, red, and white lights on. Some blast music while the fireworks burst in the air, and then it’s a mad dash with boats crossing each other in different directions. You can usually catch several shows in the days surrounding the Fourth. My kids are fans of the water, too, and have already learned to water ski on the Snoopy skis, little wooden skis with Snoopy painted on them, which I also learned on. Though they don’t go out on the water as much as I did growing up, many of our vacations, even outside the state, involve the water. We love using a Hobie Cat, a small four-person boat, when we visit Florida. My newest water hobby is stand-up paddle boarding. I got hooked on it when my wife and I attended a long-weekend wedding and got the chance to try it. I talk about it so much that my family even got me my own stand-up paddleboard for my birthday last year. Whether I’m sailing, watching a fireworks display from the waves, or trying out a new hobby, I have countless fond memories on the water. So, this Celebrate Your Lakes Day, I might still joke that all the Great Lakes belong to us here in Michigan, but really, their beauty and calm belong to us all, and it’s up to every one of us to care for them. –Kyle Matthews 1 (248) 543-0340

LAYER THE LOVE. Boho beach style is all

about layering: the more texture, the better. Start with bold-patterned rugs and breezy textiles. Pile on plants at every level, like hanging greenery, oversized ferns, and

tiny succulents perched on window sills. Drape a dreamy, sheer canopy over your bed and mix up your linens with playful patterns that feel like a sunny day at the beach. While you want to pack on personal touches, be sure to keep everything within a set color palette to avoid a cluttered look! NATURE IS YOUR BEST ACCESSORY. Coastal and boho styles draw inspiration from the great outdoors, so it’s no surprise that natural materials are a must. Choose light woods and jute rugs, and don’t be afraid to mix in raw textures like rattan, leather, and linen. The goal is to create an open, breezy, inviting space like your favorite seaside hideaway. DARE TO BE BOLD. Boho beach decor was made for the adventurous at heart. Bright colors, eclectic prints, and playful accessories are welcome here. Hang that vibrant tapestry, throw down those Moroccan floor cushions, and splash in green, turquoise, and gold pops. This style is about creating joy, so let your home reflect your happiest, most colorful self!

4 Nantucket’s Timeless Allure

WHALES, WINE, AND WHIMSY Why Nantucket Should Be Your Next Getaway

When many Americans think of vacation destinations, they envision beautiful state parks, sunny beaches in Florida or California, and the mountains of Appalachia and the Rockies. However, many states across the country offer exciting events and beautiful scenery. If Massachusetts isn’t already on your radar, consider giving it a closer look the next time you plan a vacation. Cape Cod has beautiful beaches and a rich history that many don’t know about, and something exciting is always happening in Boston. But if you want to experience the true essence of Massachusetts, take a trip to Nantucket. Nantucket is a small island, only 14 miles long and about 3.5 miles wide. Its history with European settlers goes back over 500 years. First sighted by an Englishman named Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602, the island was settled by colonists 50 years later in 1659. Not long after, they spotted whales offshore, which put

Nantucket on the map. Whaling became the ultimate trade for people living in the area, and the island even became the world’s whaling capital until the 1850s. You can

still view whales from the island today, and if you want to get the full story, check out the Nantucket Whaling Museum. If whale watching and museum touring aren’t your thing, you can pursue other exciting activities around Nantucket. The island is bike-friendly, and many trails will take you by all the best sights. Many one-of-a-kind boutiques occupy beautiful historic buildings, and there’s even a public golf course that will leave all your golfing buddies jealous. If you go in May, you may even experience the renowned Wine & Food Festival.

Nantucket is full of historic architecture, beautiful scenery, and friendly people. You might even see a famous face during your visit! This is a vacation you’ll be talking about for years to come!
