ARTS & CULTURAL ENRICHMENT

ART CORE

Empowering members explore and express creativity while celebrating cultural diversity through hands-on experiences in visual, written, and performing arts. SUMMER ART This summer, our members embarked on a creative journey through the fascinating history of art — from abstract expressionism and realism to cubism and beyond. Along the way, they discovered groundbreaking artists who pioneered these movements and shaped the art world.

WHAT OUR MEMBERS ACCOMPLISHED

Inspired by these masters, our young artists created original works to reflect their imagination and self- expression. We're proud to witness their creativity flourish as they connect with both the history and the heart of art.

STEM PROGRAMS

TECHNOLOGY & STEM CORE DIGITAL AND HANDS-ON LEARNING SUMMER CAMP ADVENTURES Throughout the summer, members had the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of digital and hands-on learning experiences! In one module, members learned the ins and outs of how the CIA operates by tackling online puzzles and challenges. They also explored how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is trained, coded digital avatars, and created music! This summer’s chemistry and engineering activities engaged students in collaborative, hands-on learning allowing them to experiment, build, and discover together. Youth created fake snow, raced marbles down custom ramps, and explored optical illusions by recreating holograms using Pepper’s ghost effect.

CODE + CREATE SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS Over 250 youth across 7 Club sites participated in Code + Create camps this summer, many for the first time! Members were able to express themselves through a series of digital art and storytelling lessons, including selfie stickers, custom emojis, and animations. At the end of the week, they combined these concepts to create a mini- movie, all on Keynote! They also explored biomimicry, building and programming their own LEGO robots inspired by animal superpowers, such as a grasshopper and rhinoceros. CODE + CREATE SUMMER INTERNS DEVELOPING FUTURE CAREER PATHWAYS

STEM SPECIALTY PROGRAMS

As part of our commitment to inspiring and empowering all youth, we had several Summer Program Specialists who assisted with our Code + Create programming. In addition to providing invaluable support and guidance to our members, they developed professional and teaching skills by updating their resume and creating their own lessons!

Our BGCSV interns had the opportunity to collaborate with Apple volunteers at our Alviso Clubhouse for a Code + Create event. Together, they sparked curiosity and sharpened skills as club members learned how to animate characters, shapes, and scenes to tell their own stories.

“Opportunities like resume workshops and networking are experiences I will take with me forever... And, also, I learned a new coding language, Swift!” Christian O. Starting this fall as a Computer Science Major at UC Berkeley

“It was amazing to see how creative the students were - turning simple problems to impactful solutions for their everyday lives.” Areeba R. Intended M.S. in Data Science at UC Irvine

Our Code + Create summer interns provided a win-win learning experience for all!

EXPLORING POSSIBILITIES COLLEGE TOURS Our Club teens--many of whom are first-generation, college- bound--had the incredible opportunity to visit San Francisco State University, Stanford University and University of California, Santa Cruz. These immersive experiences offered a first-hand glimpse into college life, sparking meaningful conversations about academic pathways, career aspirations, and the steps needed to achieve them. Beyond the campus tours, teens explored local highlights, including a scenic hike along the breathtaking Santa Cruz coastline at Wilder Ranch State Park, followed by lunch at a cozy downtown pizzeria. They also strolled Pier 39, ice cream or hot chocolate in hand, watching California sea lions bask lazily in the sun. Field trips like these are more than just a day away from home— they’re about exposure, empowerment, and expanding possibilities.

HIGH SCHOOL & POSTSECONDARY SUCCESS

“My favorite part of the trip was hiking and seeing the view of the sea and beach. What stood out to me most at UCSC was that the entire campus is surrounded by nature.” — Ricky, SJHS Senior in Aspires
