Competition: The College of Business proposal extensively outlines the Washington state universities offering majors, minors, and/or certificates in Entrepreneurship. Generally, each program has a stronger focus on the “start-up” of a business as opposed to developing an entrepreneurial mind-set that can further a student’s career trajectory within a chosen domain. Of the public and private universities offering entrepreneurial programs, Eastern Washington University, CWU’s strongest competitor, has developed a stand-alone degree which emphasizes the skills and knowledge needed to be an entrepreneur, including how to pitch an idea, defining the value proposition of the business, financing through startup, refining their business model and creating a successful business plan. The degree has a more centralized focus on creating a business from the ground up and is targeted toward students with career goals that involve starting new businesses, working in a startup or early growth business environment, or working in a family business. ii Additionally, EWU has developed a Center for Entrepreneurship which offers competitive opportunities to students that can translate into mentoring opportunities, fellowships, co-curricular programs, and club memberships. iii CWU’s proposal relies more on the external networking within a chosen industry or domain with a stronger focus on mentor relationships within an existing organization with the intention of creating and developing new products or services for that organization. With the necessity for students to pursue a first degree in a specialized domain in addition to the entrepreneurial degree there is a risk of students not being able to afford the entrepreneurial piece, either with regard to time or cost to degree. A student with a first major in any of the arts, humanities or sciences may struggle more with the business concepts being taught in the pre-requisite and requisite core classes needed for the Entrepreneurship degree. With the pre-requisite courses needed before being able to take the core and elective classes, a student would be required to take another
