Y8 Bulletin 05.07.24

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

As mentioned last week I was going to update you about the sports day results. I can now officially let you know that the winners were Seacole! Congratulations, to everyone that participated in the event. The enthusiasm of the participants and their supporters truly made it a day to remember. Alongside traditional athletic events, fun activities like the skipping race and egg and spoon race ensured everyone could get involved, regardless of their athletic abilities. It was an amazing showing of school spirit. You all should be very proud of your efforts. In Drama this half term, students have been studying a scheme entitled Witchcraft, where they have been challenging gender stereotypes. This week, they modernised Macbeth, and we were delighted to have our Taiwanese visitors join in the activities. These visiting students will be with us for two weeks, and it’s been wonderful to see our students making them feel welcome and engaging with them in various activities like this. This week, Mr. Sharp spoke to the students about learning and the different methods we can use to train ourselves to learn. He explained how everyone learns differently and emphasised that as novices, students need to try various methods to see what works best for them. On Thursday, we had a successful Drop Down Day as Year 8 participated in the 8billionideas programme. Students worked in groups to flex their entrepreneurial skills on a sustainability project. The creativity, presentation skills, and organisation displayed by many students were impressive. It was great to see everyone engaging positively and making the most of the opportunity. As we look towards the two final weeks of the year I remind all Y8s that there should be no false eyelashes worn at school or false nails. We are to maintain those high expectations that have been set throughout the year. I look forward to the final two weeks and know that the students will be working hard till the end of the year.

MR SWEENEY, HEAD OF YEAR 8

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Safiyyah’s War by Hiba Noor Khan

As Setti once said “this is not goodbye, this is just see you later.”

Despite this book simply being words on a piece of paper, quotes like this can change people’s lives. This book is for anyone: people who have lost a loved one, people who are suffering through a war, people who love travelling. It is a powerful book about the importance of caring for other people, no matter who they are, what religion they are or what they believe in life.
