GROUPS Chess

The Chess Club has continued to thrive in 2020. A growing number of dedicated boys have committed their time, energy and mental gymnastics to the activity at lunchtime sessions. The Canterbury chess championship was held in Term 3 – and the College team of Alistair Morgan, Jonathan Huo, Hanson Xie and Arthur Woolhouse were undefeated in the rounds, went on to claim the title and to qualify for the nationals. The national finals were held in Tauranga during the Term 3 break.

The boys played well, despite some tough competition. As a result, they finished a respectable 11th place. Thank you to Mr Arthur Woolhouse (Senior) for accompanying the boys to the tournament and looking after them so well. The House competition has continued to be highly competitive and a way for our regular players to demonstrate their skills to their fellow House members. This competition is enjoyed by the students as it allows boys to play who otherwise would not have the time. The final this year was between Condell’s and Corfe. Condell’s played with commitment but were narrowly defeated by competition winners Corfe House.

Chess captain Alistair Morgan leaves us this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him on behalf of the club for his leadership, enthusiasm and encouragement. He has brought new members to the group and has certainly led by example in terms of his passion for chess. Many thanks to all the boys involved. We look forward to 2021 and would welcome any new members.
