CULTURE Instrumental Music

ORCHESTRA Sadly, but inevitably, many events were cancelled, postponed, or in many cases both, due to the various changes in Covid-19 alert levels over the year. Early in the year, the focus was on the Orchestra Extravaganza with St Margaret’s College and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, which was due to take place in Term 1. This was cancelled due to the nationwide lockdown, as was the annual combined concert with St Margaret’s. The next scheduled performance was the St Margaret’s concert in August, which was first postponed, then back on, and finally cancelled due to the alert level at the time. The secondary schools’ Orchestra Festival was also a casualty in 2020. The Combined Orchestra finally managed its first and only performance of the year at the Sedley Wells Music Competition, playing “All in a Garden Green” and “Fork Dance” from Coxon’s “Garden Sketches” and “Czardas” by Monti. Year 13 student Ederick He was leader of the orchestra. The frustration of the year was that although we managed to rehearse for much of the year, we did only the one performance. ROCK BANDS Rock bands continue to be very popular, with 13 bands at College this year, 10 of which entered Smokefree Rockquest. Because of Covid, all bands submitted online videos, recorded at Orange Studios. College band By Tomorrow won the Canterbury regional final, and JJ and the Stingers won the ZM Best Song Award for their second song.

BIG BAND AND JAZZ COMBO*

SEDLEY WELLS MUSIC COMPETITION The Sedley Wells Music Competition is open to any student at College who plays a musical instrument or sings solo. This year the adjudicator was Alex Goodwin, assistant organist at the Transitional Cathedral.

Sadly, the annual Southern Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim, due to be held in early August, was cancelled, but we were pleased some performances were able to go ahead. The Big Band performed at House Music, and the Big Band and Jazz Combo performed at the Christchurch Big Band Festival in October and in a gig at Fat Eddie’s in November.
