The premier competition was split into two pools of seven teams, with two pre- season games, a semi-final and final for each team. With those games, plus a friendly against Burnside High School and an exchange with Nelson College, the 1st XI ended up playing 12 games for the season. A reasonable outcome given the circumstances.
situation. Joe has put in a great deal of work looking at how we can build on this partnership in the future and can continue to improve the football experience for College players. As always, it has been the enthusiasm, enjoyment and energy of the boys that really makes each season unique. This year has been no exception. Whether it be the joy of the 14 White team winning their final game 5–2 after what was a pretty tough season; or the groups of boys that would get together on a Sunday for some extra training; the back and forth encounters of the 15A team against Parklands United and Hornby United, where the scores were 4–3, 5–5, 7–7 and 3–4; or whether it was the 14 Black side being involved in a penalty shoot-out that had more misses and saves than goals; or the inspirational leadership of 3rd XI captain Jim Gibbs; or the 1st XI scoring two goals in the last seven minutes of a game to keep the Challenge Shield … the effort of the boys as a whole has been fantastic. Whether the enthusiasm, enjoyment and energy has gone rewarded or not, that is football and that is why we love the game. Before 2020 we never had to sanitise, wipe and sanitise again, sign in to Covid Tracer apps, or prevent spectators from watching games, but – as has been said many times already – it was a unique season. As one parent wrote, it was “a great season team. Lots of fun, lots of enjoyment, and the football/sport was really so very important in giving us all a break from the stresses and challenges of the year and what it’s brought to everyone.” That probably sums it up nicely. Whilst it was a bit of a hassle at times, it certainly was a great season in a pretty interesting year.
The season started in exciting fashion, with a 3–2 win over Christchurch
