year. Also, huge thanks to coach Gus Wakeling, who shared his knowledge and skills all season, helping the boys improve and develop, and inspiring them to try to be the best player they can be. We also congratulate Gus on his selection for the Canterbury men's hockey team.

in defence, we saw strategic play right down the field. Josh Garland’s second year as goalkeeper saw him develop into a truly talented young goalie. Josh attended practices with the development teams and was often playing two or three matches on Fridays. He went on to play for the 1st XI, which was a fantastic achievement.

Sutherland played the final couple of games, having returned from a serious injury, and demonstrated he would have had a positive impact on the team had he been fit throughout the season. Unfortunately, the traditional Tanner Cup tournament in Term 3 was cancelled, which meant we were unable to challenge ourselves against the rest of the country, but a 2nd place finish in the local competition was a good return, with our only defeats coming against a strong Christchurch Boys’ High School Colts XI 0–3 and 1–2. The team was as strong as any we have had in recent years, so the loss of the trip to Hamilton was a real shame, as we would most likely have been challenging for the top four at least. Many thanks to coaches Will and Nick for their positive and directed training sessions, along with excellent match preparation each week. Also massive thanks to our wonderful parents for their patience and long-distance support from behind the fences.

3RD XI HOCKEY Manager: Monique Ellis-Martin Coach: Fergal Dods Team: Jake Abbiss, Liam Cassidy, Thomas Currie, Lawson Davey, Eugene Farrell, Josh Garland, Jed Gimblett, Tom Goodfellow, Timothy Hanson, Richard Harnett, Archie Hayman, Jonty Iliffe, Arthur Mahon, Finlay McElroy, Mathew Paterson, Harry Penter, William Picton-Warlow, Sam Pinckney, Digby Sheild The 2020 season was like no other. With Covid putting a hold on all sports in New Zealand, it wasn’t until midway through the season that the boys could start training and then matches began. Boys having to arrive at and scan into turfs just before game time, and spectators standing outside the grounds trying to catch glimpses of the match, was something no one could have predicted. Nevertheless, the 3rd XI squad continued to develop as a team throughout the season. They were positive and would try their best at every match. Unfortunately, the grade we were in was a tough one and we only took away one win. The boys played matches against College Black, Christchurch Boys’ High School Gold, Shirley Boys’ High School Colts, St Bede’s College Rangers, Cashmere High School 2nd XI, and St Bede’s College Colts. Over the season a very hard-working defence team of Jake Abbiss, Tim Hanson, Digby Sheild and Richard Harnett emerged. These boys became our key defenders and attackers. Led by Eugene Farrell

Coaches: Will Duston, Nick Lidstone Team: Jono Murphy (captain), Zach Adams, Jack Baker-Sherman, James Drury, Josh Durant, Isaac Heap, Jack Martin, Finn McCormack-Young, Alex McEwan, Nate Ovendale, George Pearse, Barnaby Stanton, Will Studholme, Jack Sutherland, George van Leeuwen, Lucca Wiseman The Colts XI started this very strange season with high hopes. Despite the less than ideal preparation, the team quickly gelled under the tutelage of previous 1st XI captains, Will Duston and Nick Lidstone. The defence, led by the excellent Zach Adams in goal, were strong and dependable. Will Studholme, James Drury, Jono Murphy, Alex McEwan and Barnaby Stanton created a “hard to get through” barrier, and Zach seemed to save most things that did. In midfield, Jack Baker-Sherman pulled the strings and was the heartbeat of the team in terms of passing and strong ball carrying. Josh Durant, George van Leeuwen and Lucca Wiseman backed him up with strong and determined running. Up front, Finn McCormack-Young led the way with 18 goals, including twice scoring four in a match. He was backed up by the effervescent Nate Ovendale, who scored 11 goals, Lucca Wiseman with 7, and George Pearse who scored 6 goals, including a fine hat-trick against Rolleston College 1st XI. Isaac Heap and Jack Martin also starred at various times through the season and Jack
