YOUTH BLACK HOCKEY Manager: Warren Lidstone Coach: Keryn Ambler Team: Jordan Astley, Charles Beale, James Burt, Bruce Chen, Yusef Elnahas, Max Falvey, Callum Gard, Josh Garland, Sam Hales, Louis Hastie, Darcy Laidlaw, Finn Melhuish, Ben Murphy, Guy Roadley, Alan Viles, Mitchell Young The Youth Black team had a positive season in terms of victories. The team went through the round robin part of the competition undefeated, finishing 2nd as a result of the 0–0 draw against top of the table Christchurch Boys’ High School. The semi-final saw College pitted against Shirley Boys’ High School and, despite playing our best game of the year and dominating 90 per cent of play, the game ended at 1–1. A penalty shoot-out followed – which, unfortunately, we lost. However, the boys bounced back to win the play-off for 3rd and 4th 7–0. This was a fitting way to finish and demonstrated the real ability of this team. Our defence was a strong and cohesive unit. Finn Melhuish, Jordan Astley and Ben Murphy were the key cogs, as their central positions saw them tackle strongly and regain possession. Guy Roadley, Charles Beale and Yusef Elnahas were used wide and were able to expertly link with the midfield, while Max Falvey was “Mr Consistent” and our most improved player. Although we began the season without a goalkeeper, we were fortunate to have Josh Garland play many games for us, and his skills were critical in securing victory in a number of games. In the midfield, Darcy Laidlaw showed immense promise as a distributor and was often the key playmaker at the attacking end. James Burt was always aggressive, while Alan Viles and Louis Hastie fluctuated between the midfield and the strike line. Up front, Sam Hales and Bruce Chen brought passion and desire to the team, while Callum Gard’s promotion to striker saw him lethal in front of goal. Mitchell Young was probably the top goal scorer, as he often used his skills to finish well from the right side. Most of these boys have considerable potential and the basic skills to play at a much higher level.
Their development will now depend upon their motivation and desire to work hard.
began both scoring and saving a number of goals later in the season. To finish the season with three wins and three draws was a good success. Will Pryor was awarded the most valuable player. In his capacity as striker, Will was instrumental in leading the attack. His fast pace and ability to shoot quickly led to him scoring eight goals in the season. Seann Zhao was awarded the Worner Award for the player who showed the most spirit and enthusiasm for his positive attitude and strong work ethic during both games and practices. The most improved player award went to both Jackson Flint and Harry Vaughan. Jackson grew in confidence and gained skills throughout the season as a midfielder, whilst Harry came back from early season injury to confidently slot into both the midfield and halfline, where he showed a range of stick skills and attacking ability. Thank you to the supportive family and friends on the sidelines. They were always positive and encouraging of the team, particularly on the cold and wet Friday nights. As were the 1st XI hockey players who showed up before and after their own games to umpire for the team. Eloise Nevin Manager, Youth White Hockey
