last two minutes in our final game. Man of steel. Practices were held at the cricket ground and a nominated player would end every practice with a joke. None of the jokes have made it into this report, but they were an important part of practice to remind players and coaches that we should always finish with a smile on our face. Ollie Shore was our highest point scorer with 65, as well as seven tries. Guest player Tom Thyne scored four tries. On behalf of the management I would like to thank Flynn and the team for the experiences this year and also the totally unexpected bag of goods after our last game. It wasn’t Kelly’s famous “bag of ribs”, but it was much appreciated. Also, thanks to Dodsy for help with getting guest players along to join us on weekends when we would have been short of players and getting our coaching team together.
26–19 over CBHS 3rd XV Black
Our loss to St Thomas of Canterbury College Blue, the eventual grade winners, was by one point: 24–25. The team aimed to play expansive rugby. Set play was reliable, with a real strength in scrumming. We lost a bit of momentum towards the end of the season, but were fortunate to qualify for the semi-finals against St Bede’s College 2nd XV. The boys played with a lot of courage and the score was 0–0 for much of the game. St Bede’s eventually won 0–12. A number of players managed to get games for the 1st XV during the season, and the 3rd XV players who joined us made a very good contribution. Many thanks to our coaches for their hours of dedication, detailed feedback on Hudl and at training, as well as their great technical coaching skills. We were very fortunate to have three such outstanding coaches, with impressive rugby pedigrees. We were very fortunate to get a full season of rugby after the disruptions of Covid-19, and the boys threw themselves into training, and strength and conditioning, with great vigour. They also enjoyed the joint training session with the 1st XV. The team goals were “Sweep the sheds” (service and gratitude), as well as “NDH”, which politely translates into “being a good man”. The boys wanted to remain humble and grounded by being grateful and working for the betterment of their teammates, and by providing service to the team for the good of all.

This was matched by the coaches having to dig deep into their knowledge base to develop and motivate the team to continue trying to improve and, importantly, to enjoy themselves. We were struck by numerous injuries throughout the season, with six concussion events, a moon boot, various sprains, a lot of cuts and two season ending events. This gave players from other teams the opportunity to get some game time with the U16s – and thank you to Jaiden Beer, Alberto Benito Santisteban, Luc Botherway, Ash Cassidy, Reilly Reed, Jayden Sa, Jack Smith and Tom Thyne for stepping up. Not a bad forward pack there! If I have missed your name, I am sorry. Some interesting events in our season include Jim Luisetti featuring as hooker one game, Louis Hitchings taking two corner flag tries, and Kosuke Hashimoto getting player of the day one week when playing prop and being on the wing for his next game. Toby Beresford played every minute of the season apart from the
