The U14A team had an excellent season, reaching the final of their competition. In the nine match season we had wins against Linwood College 48–17 and 15–14, St Bede’s College 66–10, Rangiora High School 60–31, and Christchurch Boys’ High School 64–20. We also had some tight finishes, such as Benji Nation’s dropped goal in the final minute to win against Linwood College, and the comeback against St Andrew’s College when we were behind by 19 points with 20 minutes to go, to only lose by two points. The semi-final match against CBHS exemplified the team’s tenacity throughout the season. We were comfortably ahead at 33–17, before CBHS made a comeback to score three tries in eight minutes, so we were trailing by one point with only minutes to go. Instead of panicking, we worked our way to the right end of the field and PJ Palamo scored to give us the 38–34 win. The final against St Andrew’s College did not go our way. Although we were even at half-time after tries to Frankie Meates (which brought
his total to 17 for the season) and a length of the field runaway by Felix Huston, we could not hold on during the second half. A number of players finished with this as one of their best games of the season, including Tom Rawstron’s and Beau Armstrong’s tireless work rate, Sam Chittock’s and Wills Ockwell’s running, and our scrambling defence, no better epitomised than by Benji Nation’s tackling at fullback. You cannot ask for more than that. To Mike Peacock and Tom Houghton, who coached the team this year. It is a pleasure to have coaches who know young men. Who know how to keep things simple, who know how to keep things enjoyable, who know how to allow players to play the game in front of them on the field, who know how to keep information understandable, and who know that winning an U14 game of rugby is not the most important thing in life. The players should be hugely pleased by their ability to stay in games, their tenacity, the responsibility they showed about getting themselves
organised, their acceptance of each other, and their humour through the disruptions to the season.
