Sadly, we were mid preparation when things started to look bleak, with growing awareness of the Covid-19 pandemic building steam offshore and the decision to go into lockdown. The loss of events began with the cancellation of the regional qualifying event planned for Lake Hood, followed by a sudden loss of training space at the Naval Point Club in Lyttelton. Nationals were put on hold for a month, then cancelled once the country entered lockdown in March. Once the national body made the call to cancel, it precipitated an early end to the season, but there was hope of a possible resumption of competition in September. This did not eventuate, however, thanks to various and changing alert levels across the country, especially in Auckland. Sadly, there was no opportunity to hold a national sailing event in 2020. Nevertheless, we have a good bunch of keen youngsters who started sailing this season, and we hope to include some of these boys in the racing team for 2021. Sailing is a sport that makes huge demands on participants, not only of
a physical nature, but also in terms of time – so it is not a sport for the faint-hearted or weak-spirited. I would like to thank long-serving sailing enthusiast and staff member Kate Belton for her contribution to College sailing. Kate has put in many years of good service for the sailing team out on the water, often in quite difficult conditions, and I wish her well as she begins her new role of managing “dry” volleyball teams at College. I would also like to thank Eloise Nevin and Shelly Jackson, who have also put in immense hours during the year helping to manage and train boys out at Lyttelton and by building up a range of activities and resources for non-sailing days. It was very pleasing that the team volunteered to assist at the Year 9 camps, with Year 10 students Oscar Chaffey and Mitch Brents skippering and coaching sailing over four days
at Corsair Bay during Service Week. They were teaching boys who were more often than not having their first ever sailing experience, and they did so with great skill and enthusiasm. Max Luisetti was awarded the H Grigg & S Kidner Cup for services to sailing, in recognition of his leadership skills and for him becoming one of our most proficient, fast skippers in the group. Arthur Mahon received the cup for most improved sailor. He has been a real find in terms of his willingness to build his skippering as well as racing skills, plus always showing a keenness to help organise and manage the juniors and the vast amount of equipment the team has in the fleet.
We look forward to a return to competition both locally and nationally in 2021.
