SPORT Table Tennis
MiC: Lesley Anderson-McKenna Managers: Lesley Anderson- McKenna, Shelly Jackson Coach: Michael Hamel At the beginning of the season 31 boys signed up to play table tennis, making this the largest number of boys involved in the sport for many years. We entered six teams in the Wednesday competition, two teams in the B grade and four teams in the C grade. We were fortunate to have Michael Hamel coach the boys again this year. Michael’s experience is invaluable and he has made training both challenging and fun. Covid-19 meant it was a very truncated season, with the competition only beginning at the start of Term 3. Nevertheless, the boys enjoyed a very successful season. Following on from the success of 2019, four of our six teams played in the semi-finals this year. Our B1 team of Steven Zhang, Justin Yin,
Peter Wu, Ben Shipston and Calib Wyness were strong competitors, and they enjoyed the success of their season. Jaspar Thomas joined Steven, Peter and Ben in the final, and he contributed solidly to the team’s success. They met Burnside High School Mixed B and had a comprehensive 7–2 win. They certainly earned their place at the top of the B grade competition. Our B2 team of Thomas Saunders, Harry Beaglehole, Andrew Welsh and Duncan Fletcher was also very competitive. They lost only one game in the lead up to the finals and won the final against Hillmorton High School Blue 8–1. Our C3 team also won their final against Aidanfield Christian School 9–0, which meant College teams won three out of the four finals in which they played. The interhouse competition was again a highlight of the season. This was played, as usual, with enthusiasm and good humour and resulted in an
exciting final, once again between Richards and Julius. In a repeat of last year, it was a close fought thing and a great game to watch. The Richards House boys finally took the prize, but the Julius boys were fierce competitors, and all the more impressive because none of them played table tennis as a competitive sport. There are many talented players who do not play table tennis competitively, but clearly spend a good deal of time playing recreationally. 2020 has been a successful and enjoyable season and I thank all the boys for their contribution. I particularly want to thank Shelly Jackson, who assisted me this year, and our coach Michael Hamel, who shared his expertise and experience with the boys.
