ACADEMIC Departmental Reviews
AGRIBUSINESS Agribusiness has continued to grow in popularity amongst the boys, with five classes across Years 12 and 13 in 2020, and six projected classes in 2021. Now coming up to its fourth year, this innovative programme is a way for our boys to learn more about day-to-day operation in the world of business, while using the primary sector as the context. While most of the content examines business activities which are post-farm gate, the course also offers options and learning opportunities for those boys who are seeking careers in on-farm management. Thus the class is an exciting blend of business and farming, where boys learn and practise the issues associated with running a business, whilst also learning about New Zealand’s biggest export sector.
Being such a practical, “real” subject means it lends itself to inviting a range of guest speakers to come and talk to the boys about what they have learned in their particular areas of expertise. This year, we would like to thank the following for giving so generously of their time and wisdom:
• Regan Powell from the Young Enterprise Scheme • Assistant to the Director of Sport Stephen Dods from Christ’s College on his experience establishing a high performance sports consultancy • Finance Manager Connor Phipps and Director of Finance & Operations Rob McFarlane from Christ's College • Director of Advancement Claire Sparks from Christ's College on marketing • Ian McQuarrie from Continuous Group We also had Gerry Shackleton, Calvin Smith, Stephen Dods and Phillip Cotter support boys as business mentors, and Old Boys Richard Polson, Hugh Murchison and Andrew McKeller come in to judge the Year 13 business pitch.
• Gordon McCormick from Ravensdown • Ben Davidson from Rangiora Veterinary Centre
• Don Chamberlain from Westpac • Sally Goldsmith from Brannigans • Alastair Picton-Warlow from PW Wines • John Hamilton from John Hamilton Construction • Martin Harcourt from Value Cars • Robert and Rachel McCarthy from McCarthy Contracting
