Career profiles In spite of Covid-19, we were able to complete the one-on-one interviews which cover current subject choices, character strengths, achievements, any work-related experiences, future subjects, and short and long-term careers goals. During lockdown successful Google Meet interviews were had with Year 12 students and follow-up calls with parents. It is encouraging to see boys taking the initiative and making voluntary career appointments. Careers Website College’s careers website CareerWise has been upgraded this year and careers-related news, events and job posts are regularly posted on the site. Those who have registered to receive weekly emails will get into the habit of checking current information. It has been interesting to track the numbers of boys looking at the site each month. I also encouraged parents to sign up through my column in College’s In Black & White newsletter. Immerse & Inspire – MyMahi This year, all Year 10 students signed up to MyMahi during the Immerse & Inspire programme. Free for young people, MyMahi is a digital platform designed to support the development of their learning, future pathways and personal wellbeing. It works by encouraging them to own and manage their own progress; helping them discover who they are, their passions, and strengths; supporting their exploration of future pathways; and helping them develop work readiness, in attitude, skills and experiences. MyMahi also provides a mentoring platform for schools, so they can better support student wellbeing. It also provides parents with a mobile app so they can support their young
people as they make important life decisions. All Year 10 students added goals, character strengths, career pathways and a curriculum vitae to their MyMahi profile. Careers in the curriculum As in 2019, subject heads in various disciplines invited guest speakers to talk to their students. Agribusiness teacher Mike Field invited a range of speakers – including Gordon McCormick from Ravensdown, Ben Davidson of the Rangiora Vet Centre, Don Chamberlain from Westpac, Sally Goldsmith from Brannigans, Alastair Picton-Warlow of PW Wines, John Hamilton of John Hamilton Construction, Martin Harcourt from Value Cars, Robert and Rachel McCarthy of McCarthy Contracting, Regan Powell of the Young Enterprise Scheme, and Ian McQuarrie of the Continuous Group, as well as College staff in finance,
marketing and operations – to share their “real world” experience with the boys. Old Boys as mentors We continue to encourage Old Boys to contact the Christ’s College Old Boys’ Association if they would like to act as career mentors and talk to boys interested in their field. As a result of Covid-19 disruptions, we didn't have the opportunity to hold as many sessions in 2020 as we did in 2019. However, Old Boy Josh Ting (leaver 2018) came in and gave a very interesting talk to boys interested in medical studies in Australia. Josh compared New Zealand and Australia and gave extremely helpful advice and insight.
