JULY 2025
As a wise writer on parenting once said, children are great imitators. Our job as parents is to give them something great to imitate. I’ve written in past newsletters about how becoming a father has made me want to be a better human being. I am very intentional about trying to serve as a good role model for my kids and show them what it means to be a good person. I don’t always succeed, but I am always trying. That’s why the idea of July as Purposeful Parenting Month strikes a chord with me. As parents, I think we all strive to improve on the past. And when my dad’s generation and these are the everyday people — the heroes — I work for as I drive our cases forward to the fullest extent within our legal system, fighting for what’s right. My passions weren’t always for courtroom thrills, though. Growing up in Smyrna, I sought to chase a different kind of rush: the roar of the racetrack. I wasn’t half bad either, eventually taking my hobby for auto racing from amateur status in 2004 all the way to semi-pro in 2007. Unfortunately, like so many other things that went down along with the economy the following year, my racing career crashed in 2008. Shattered by the abrupt end to my racing journey due to a lack of financing, G eorgia is a blue-collar state — a grassroots mix of farmland, mountains, and urban development representing ever-expanding opportunities. Being a native of North Atlanta, I have spent most of my life in this fair state, cultivating both my character and my profession as I grew up. Now, I have a distinct opportunity to help those around me in ways I hadn’t anticipated in my younger days. I lead The Lyman Firm as a proud curator of justice for the everyday person, somebody who might not have gotten a fair shake before they met me. I believe one person can be the face of a greater movement,
Teaching Your Kids to Keep Cool
was raising children, the prevailing idea was to suppress your feelings and remain stoic in the face of hardship. There is nothing wrong with that. But it’s also essential to show kids how to recognize a feeling, such as fear or sadness, then label it and understand that it is just an emotion . Emotions are like waves. Kids need to know they come and go, and they aren’t going to last forever. My No. 1 goal as a parent is to teach my kids to recognize, understand, and manage those feelings. If they have that ability, I figure they can get through any challenge or hardship life throws at them. They will understand that although life may be tough, the powerful emotions they may feel are only temporary. I was playing a fast-paced, crazy card game recently with my daughter, who is 10, and my son, 12, when we careened into one of those teaching moments we encounter as parents. In this game, called Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza, players race each other to be the first to slap their hand down on a pile of cards on the table. My kids were doing what kids do, fooling around, competing hard, and pretending to cheat. And I was getting pretty mad about it. It’s nice they have a healthy competitive streak, but it’s just a game! After years of unparalleled grit, drive, and success in the field of law, I was fortunate enough to be able to open my own practice in January of 2018. This new venture has even allowed me to work alongside my brother, a paralegal and case manager, in what has been one of the most exciting periods of my life. For now, our plans for the future include an imminent expansion of the firm and growing the company in ways that still allow us to keep our fundamental values and operations in check. Frustrated, I expressed my disapproval in a loud voice: “Nobody likes a cheater!” They knew I was upset. At home with my wife Lindsay beside me, and our two children — our five-year-old son Although I lost it for a moment, I calmed down and seized on a chance to model another skill I want them to learn — emotional repair. I circled back and I began to look for a new avenue to pour my passions into. As we grow older and further away from our teens and 20s, we begin to realize that life isn’t always about going fast, both literally and metaphorically. It was during my post racing downtime that I realized I wanted to go back to school at Georgia State. After spending years as a writer and editor, I discovered and followed my newfound calling and began practicing law after graduating from law school.
admitted I was wrong, emphasized that I loved them, and vowed to do better. “Guys, look, I’m really sorry I acted that way,” I said. “That was just an emotion I was having. I was just getting frustrated.” I drew on a handy analogy I’ve learned in my reading on parenting: “You have to stay in the driver’s seat of your life,” I told them, “and make sure your emotions stay in the passenger seat. You can’t ever let your emotions take the wheel.” During our game, I told them I let frustration and anger take the wheel for a minute. I had to tell those emotions to get back in the passenger seat. Like me, my son carries much more emotion than my daughter, and he can get angry when he doesn’t win or things don’t go his way. I had the same kind of intense feelings when I was his age. Managing those emotions came more naturally for me as time went on. As my son moves into his teens, I’m sure the same will be true for him. I must have a dozen parenting books, and one of my favorites is “Good Inside” by Dr. Becky Kennedy. She holds that every kid has goodness inside, and it’s our job as parents to help them work through all those emotions running wild inside, rise above them, and regulate them so their inner goodness can shine through. As we enter Purposeful Parenting Month, I hope you have a chance to enjoy your own kids’ inner goodness firsthand. -Thomas Lyman That’s when I tell them that there are a million different lawyers out there doing a million different things, but when I take on your case for a serious injury or a wrongful death suit, you’ll remember me as a man who gave you the best possible chance while shooting you straight every step of the way. James and three-year-old daughter Cleo — I am fully immersed in the fun-loving, homely, and exciting life of my family. They are my foundation, and without them nothing would be possible. But I also have a second family of sorts in my clients, whom I treat with the respect and attention a person is owed whenever they find they’re backed in a corner and need help. The pleasure I get from representing good, honest people in the courtroom is unrivaled when compared to the other fields of profession I’ve engaged in life. Oftentimes, I ask a client to share the names of the attorneys they’ve worked with on other cases. Almost none of them are able to muster an answer — the names of their lawyers completely lost in the tides of life’s trials. -Thomas J. Lyman

The Unexpected Discoveries of Everyday Items When Serendipity Leads to Innovation
Looking around your house, you’ll spot countless inventions you couldn’t imagine living without, from your television to the refrigerator. We like to imagine the inventors behind these ideas were intentional with their actions, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes, the latest and greatest discoveries occur by happenstance.
As other alternatives gained popularity, Kutol Products saw their sales fall. A Kutol employee’s sister-in-law thought the product would be great for modeling. After testing it with kids, she found they loved molding it into various shapes. Thus, Play-Doh was born, saving a floundering company on the verge of bankruptcy. The Microwave In 1945, Percy Spencer, a self-taught engineer, was leading a radar project when he discovered a chocolate bar in his pocket had melted while testing a piece of equipment called a magnetron. Wanting to see if he could reproduce the same results, Spencer placed some popcorn kernels near the equipment. Within seconds, the popcorn popped. He tested it once more with an egg before confirming his findings. Understanding
that the magnetron cooked food quickly, he crafted a metal box around the device, creating the first microwave oven. Potato Chips Many Americans eat potato chips daily, but most don’t realize they’re simply an accidental product of spite. In the 1850s, George Crum was a chef at Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York. On one fateful day, shipping and railroad baron Cornelius Vanderbilt stopped in for a bite. He quickly complained that his french fries were too thick and soggy. Crum disagreed with Vanderbilt, but he remade the french fries — slicing the potatoes very thin and frying them until they were crispy and golden brown. Vanderbilt loved the new creation. Potato chips became Moon’s Lake House’s specialty until Crum opened his own restaurant. The rest is history!
The proof? Three everyday items that are nothing more than happy accidents!
Play-Doh Before gas and electric heating became commonplace in homes nationwide, many people used coal to stay warm. Unfortunately, this left the walls covered in soot. Kutol Products produced a soft, pliable compound that acted as a wallpaper cleaner to counter this.
Was Singapore’s Gum Ban the Right Move? CHEW ON THIS
Have you ever walked through a parking lot and stepped on gum, causing your foot to stick to the pavement with every step? Or have you felt somebody’s disgusting, chewed gum on the underside of a table at a restaurant? Experiencing one of these situations is enough to make you wish gum were outlawed. While chewing gum will likely always be legal in the States, there is one country where you’d have difficulty finding a single citizen chewing gum. In 1992, Singapore officially banned the sale, importation, and manufacturing of chewing gum. To understand the reasoning behind the chewing gum ban, you need to go back to the mid-1960s. Singapore had just gained its independence and was trying to find a way to establish itself on the world stage. Lee Kuan Yew, the country’s first prime minister, designed a plan to make Singapore a “first-world oasis in a third-world region.” The country quickly became known for its cleanliness, but chewing gum remained a problem. While some argued that chewing gum stuck to the pavement outside a business might mean a new burst of creativity was taking hold, Lee Kuan Yew felt differently. He stated, “Putting chewing gum on our subway train doors so they don’t open, I don’t call that creativity. I call that mischief-making.” He had a good point. The Housing and Development Board reportedly
spent $150,000 in Singapore dollars each year solely to clean up gum litter. Furthermore, there were countless reports of vandals sticking chewing gum on the door sensors of trains, disrupting their services. While citizens were divided over the chewing gum ban, it proved effective. In February 1993, there were only two chewing gum litter cases per day, as opposed to the 525 daily cases before the ban. While the ban remains in effect today, Singapore’s government partially lifted it in 2004 to allow dentists and pharmacists to prescribe and sell therapeutic gum such as nicotine gum. Even so, you shouldn’t expect to see many people walking around Singapore chewing gum and blowing bubbles!

TAKE A BREAK
Growing up with a sibling can be a magical experience. You have someone to share your experiences with who will always be there if you need someone to lean on or talk to. However, sibling relationships have their fair share of disagreements, fights, and arguments, which can develop into sibling rivalry. There’s a reason why sibling rivalries are infamous. Most people grow out of it by the time they reach adulthood, but knowing this doesn’t necessarily make things much easier for parents. Trying to navigate the complexities of a sibling rivalry can be overwhelming, especially if you’re juggling other responsibilities. The truth is that you cannot dismantle a sibling rivalry quickly once it has formed. Getting your kids to see each other from a different perspective will take time and effort. You’ll need to make some adjustments. If you notice your kids are beginning to argue, you can’t rush in and join the fight. Stay calm and collected when intervening to ensure the situation does not escalate. One of the biggest mistakes parents can make is comparing their children to each other. Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” This becomes even truer when children are involved. Your kids are their own individuals, and they will likely have different goals, passions, and interests from one another. Celebrate their individuality and help them explore their interests. You should also encourage your other children to celebrate their siblings whenever they accomplish something because it creates a much more cooperative environment. Another important action you should take when involving yourself in a sibling dispute is to listen. You might not witness the events that led to the fight or disagreement, and your main goal is not to figure out which child is to blame or in the wrong. Instead, sit down with them and have them talk through their feelings. Listen intently to everything they say and be completely impartial whenever you need to say something. If you need to respond with punishment, do so privately. You don’t need to make it a spectacle. Rivalry, Resolved Help Your Kids Grow From Foes to Friends

The 5-Second Rule Will Make You Sick 3 Health Myths You Probably Believe KANYE WEST’S CONTROVERSIAL SAMPLING German Artist Sues Over Unauthorized Track Use
We live in the golden age of information. The answers to many of life’s questions are just an internet search away. Despite this readily available wisdom, we still have a bad habit of believing health-related myths. Here are three popular health “facts” that are total works of fiction. at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when the rapper interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video to claim that Beyoncé deserved the award. His Yeezy website was also shut down after he sold a swastika T-shirt that violated Shopify’s terms. Now, the rapper behind “Stronger” and “All of the Lights” faces a new lawsuit. Obviously germs and bacteria don’t really wait five seconds to pounce, but snatching your chip off the floor fast keeps most of the germs away, right? Not according to a 2006 study published by Dr. Paul Dawson. He found conclusive evidence that when food comes into contact with a contaminated surface, bacteria are transferred immediately. Even one second spent This past March, German artist Alice Merton and two German corporations filed a lawsuit against West for “unauthorized commercial exploitation” of the musical composition “Blindside.” In 2022, Merton released her track, “Blindside,” which West sampled on tile, wood, or carpet is enough to infest your food with salmonella or another serious contaminant. The official stance from the John Hopkins Arthritis Center states, “There is no evidence that cracking knuckles causes any damage such as arthritis in the joints.” Still, chronic knuckle- cracking can lead to reduced grip strength, so you might want to break the habit anyway. BOTTLED WATER IS SAFER THAN TAP WATER
Seeking out safer water alternatives increases the sales of bottled “spring water” each year. However, bottled water is more expensive, bad for the environment, and, as Dr. Morton Tavel of the Indiana University School of Medicine pointed out, over 50 percent of bottled water is just filtered tap water. The same effect can be achieved with a home filtration system. Of course, if the tap water in your area has been contaminated, bottled water is a safer alternative. However, in most circumstances, bottled water is no healthier than tap water. without authorization for his track “Gun to My Head.” The public first became aware of the sampling in December 2023 when he debuted the song at an event in Miami. Modern medical research has shown these results to be false. As it became more well-known that West sampled “Blindside,” he and his record label finally approached Merton
