History of Quilling Quilling, an art form of coiling, shaping, and arranging paper strips to create 3-D designs, originated in ancient Egypt, when quills or bird’s feathers were used to coil the strips of paper to resemble metal filigree. During the Renaissance, French and Italian nuns coiled gold-gilded paper remnants trimmed from books to decorate religious relics. In later years, quilling became popular from Europe to the Americas when young ladies of leisure practiced the art to adorn cherished objects like jewelry boxes, ladies’ purses, tea caddies, and baskets. Today, quilling can be found in art galleries across the world and is seeing a resurgence in popularity, practiced around the world and loved by people of every age and background. ■
