The independent companies often have much in com- mon in terms of the types of equipment and investments, and the same challenge to find good employees and offer competitive benefits. Without the kinship among indepen- dents, fostered through membership in AICC, the oppor- tunities to learn from their peers in the business might not be as forthcoming. “If you come to my plant, you would say, ‘I like the way you do that’ or ‘I didn’t know you could do it that way,’” Kennedy said. “So, you always bring something back that helps your individual business grow.” The willingness of the independent companies to share ideas and help each other grow and succeed might have a lot to do with the family atmosphere and business culture that they share. “A lot of these independent companies started with families where mom is in the front office, dad is out in the plant, and the kids grow up in the business and they know how to run this and that,” Kennedy said.
