Yarmouth Group Earns Circle of Excellence Award
For more than six decades, Yarmouth Group Inc. has built a reputation not only for quality workmanship but also for a deep commitment to the community it calls home. That dedication was recently recognized in April when the company received the Circle of Excellence Award during the St. Thomas & District Chamber of Commerce Impact Awards. “It’s pretty cool,” says Rick Bishop, Vice President of Yarmouth Group. “That was an achievement to get to for sure.” Founded by Rick’s father, the company began modestly with just one employee. Over the years, it steadily expanded, growing alongside the community it serves. “My dad started the company in 1962, right at the present location,” Rick explains. “As the years went on, he hired more guys, and it just got a little bigger and bigger.” After studying manufacturing engineering in college, Rick joined the family business and helped continue its growth. Today, Yarmouth Group employs roughly 50 people and offers a wide range of services, including custom metal fabrication, structural steel work, millwright services, crane operations, trucking, portable road work and equipment moving. While the company has built a strong reputation throughout Southwestern Ontario, Rick says supporting the local community has always remained a priority. “We do a lot of sponsorship. We support lots of sports teams, and we do a lot of free work too.”

Among the many organizations and projects Yarmouth Group has supported over the years are the St. Thomas Elgin Public Art Centre, the local railway museum, parks projects throughout the city, the St. Thomas Fire Department, hospital initiatives and the new hospice. The company has also donated equipment, labour and fabrication work for numerous city projects, helping strengthen public spaces and community programs. Rick believes local businesses have an important role to play in helping communities thrive. “I think everybody should support their own communities,” he says. “That’s how communities get to grow, and people get the chance to bond with the people around them.” Even as St. Thomas continues to grow, Rick says the city still carries the feel of a close-knit community. “It still has that small- town feeling. I think St. Thomas is a little different than bigger cities.” Rick was quick to credit the company’s employees for the award’s recognition, noting their dedication and willingness to step up whenever needed. “We couldn’t get to where we are without them, obviously,” he says. “They’re talented workers, and there’s a real bond there.”
