Grill Seekers: Finding the BBQ That’s Right for You

Choosing the right BBQ isn’t just about picking something that looks good on your deck; it’s about finding the grill that fits your lifestyle, cooking style, and even your patience level. According to Geerlinks Home Hardware’s resident BBQ expert, Dan O’Neill, it all starts with understanding your options. “I retired three years ago… as a certified barbecue expert,” Dan explains. “That doesn’t mean I’m a great cook, it means I know about the appliances.” With years of factory training and experience working with different fuels and grill designs, he now enjoys helping customers make informed decisions: “Here I am retired, doing what I love… I’m available to give the customer the right information.” One of the first choices buyers face is fuel type. Charcoal grills, often called kettles, offer that classic smoky flavour but require time and practice. “They require a lot of time to get started… it’s not easy to adjust the heat,” Dan says. Gas grills, powered by propane or natural gas, are far more convenient. “Propane makes them portable… natural gas, you’re tethered to the wall, but you don’t have to lug tanks. They perform exactly the same.” Beyond fuel, it often comes down to personal preference. Features like side burners and rotisserie kits can be deal-makers or completely unnecessary. “Some people swear by them, and some people never use them,” he notes. Brand also plays a role. Geerlinks offers premium names such as Webber, Blackstone, Broil King (a Canadian option), and Traeger, which often specialize in specific styles, from griddles to smokers. But the biggest difference comes down to long-

term value. “Number one is longevity… you’re going to have that barbecue for at least 10 years,” Dan says. “The next is part support… some cheaper barbecues, you can’t get parts, so after three years, it’s at the curb.” Strong warranties are another major advantage of investing in quality. Maintenance is just as important as the initial purchase. “Cast iron grates are the premium… but they require maintenance,” he explains. “If there’s no oil on them, they’ll rust.” At the end of the day, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. “It’s all personal,” Dan says. “We’re here to educate you… to help your experience be easier.”
